#1 Frightening experience

Post by JerryL770 » Tue Jul 10, 2018 4:32 pm

I had a rather frightening experience last evening, out in my S2 FHC.

I overtook a large smoking Merc MPV, gunning it in third, went to change up once past and the rev counter went full scale as I dipped the clutch. I didn't get it into top, cutting the engine immediately and coasted for a quarter mile or so till I could pull in ........much to the amusement probably of the Merc.

Luckily this was on a long straight stretch of road whereas the previous evening I had been out on some bendy but swift possible roads.

I lifted the bonnet to find the problem. Turned out the bowl cover fixing on the centre carb had loosened allowing the breather pipe to rotate after I had floored the throttle pedal and that stopped the throttles closing more than half way

Turned the breather back out of the way and drove home gently - no full pedal!! Now tightened the bolt properly, phew!!

Glad to hear that it was a minor problem and that you and your E are OK. A similar problem has been reported a few times in which, due to engine torque probably combined with old or poor quality engine mounts, the right side engine mount has become crushed and under hard throttle the carb linkage catches on the frame rail and then when the accelerator is released, the linkage holds the throttles wide open. Change of trousers followed by change in engine mounts then required.
