#1 Series 3 Engine Oil Dipstick
Hello
I am having a very difficult time finding a replacement engine oil dipstick for my 1973 Etype Series 3. Does anyone know where i can buy one? I have tried all the usual places in USA and they do not carry it. Will buy from anywhere.
Sandy

Contact Coventry West in Georgia . If they don't have one, they will make you one.

Hi Sandy.
This was a problem I had years ago but I solved it wit a dipstick from eBay. I am fairly sure I used one from an XJ12, but now I am worried that this might be incorrect. To that end, could someone please measure an E-type V12 dipstick, including the measurements from the seat (which bears on the Dipstick tube) and both the full and refill marks of the dipstick? I can check mine, plus measure the dipstick of a Friends XJ12 Series 2 and confirm that they are compatible or otherwise.
Hopefully this makes sense and may allow Sandy to source an XJ12 dipstick, which I presume will be relatively simple.
Regards,
Simon.

I measure:
Length from seat to tip = 700mm
Minimum oil level at hashed area starts 25mm from tip
Maximum oil level is 37mm from tip (12mm wide)

My v12e stick has 90 degree twist in it, is this normal?

I have both a V12 E dipstick and an XJ12 S3 HE dipstick.
The E dipstick does not have a 90 degree twist at the top end which the XJ12 has, but the E dipstick turns through 90 degrees along its length.
The E dipstick is 48 mm longer but the end markings are essentially the same.
The top images (red) is the E -type dipstick.

Yep, agreed, seems I didn't know how to use a dipstick. Have deleted my pics. I get xj12 is 53 mm shorter.

Hi all,
Many thanks for the measurements, I could not get out to the garage at the weekend, but it appears I no longer need to!
My replacement dipstick is definitely red, so is probably correct, I will check very soon.
Hopefully this will help define the difference between XJ12 & E V12 dipsticks which must differ due to the difference in the sumps.
Thanks again,
Regards,
Simon

Aside from the fact that the width and depth of the sumps is different, consider also that the tube that the dipstick sits in has to be matched to the dipstick's length.
The reason for the twist is that after 40 years or so, the dipstick will have taken on a "set" as it sits inside the tube. In the case of the etype, it goes through two sharp 90' bends and comes out in a different place relative to where the xj12/xjs dipstick will as they are bolted to different types of manifold.
See also the previous time this was discussed on this forum.
kind regards
Marek

Thanks for all the responses. I have reached out to Coventry West, and have not heard back if they have a Etype Series 3 dipstick. If Coventry West does not have one, and if the XJ12 will not read correctly, are there any other options that anyone knows?

Hi Sandy...fully drain and refill with the correct measured quantity of oil.....then just purchase any suitable length dipstick...you can then make your own mark agianst the correct level that the measured quantity has reached.. Steve

Thank you Steve. You are right that is an option. I can do the same using an XJ12 Dipstick too.
