Does anyone know if the engine needs to come out to replace the picture frame?

Hi Bernie.....no it dosnt......fully support engine underneath before trying to remove it you will have to dismante quite a bit to remove it.. Steve

Hello Bernie,
Not that I've ever come across.

Support the tub under the chassis rails as far forward as possible and support the weight of the engine by some means. I normally use a thick slab of timber about the size of the inverted plan view of the sump to spread the load and use two jack stands in line under the sump.

Hello Joe,
Not that I'm aware of, or seen. This relatively same position on the outside of the body behind the number plate was carried through to the S3 and end of production. The exact location and alignment seemed to depend on how the operator was feeling on the day; many and varied are the angles at which they were affixed.

Hi, sorry to open an old topic. I am one of those whose picture frame has no number at all (it is in grey primer and looks like it has been changed at some time - the bonnet shows signs of having front end damage so must have been in a shunt). I have the Heritage Cert and all the other numbers are present and match including the main vin plate, tag on the A post and rear tub tag, engine number so no problems there. However I have yet to register the car and reading some of the comments I think the picture frame number (or lack of) is important and will need to be sorted. Does anyone know of someone providing stamping service for the picture frame with the correct size/ font lettering? The car isn't mobile so needs to be someone local to me (N Yorkshire).

How did the other car end up? Wrong frame stamped car number, wrong engine number and we didn’t hear about the body? So Bernie could have been sold some paperwork and a data plate for a scrapped car to legitimise a stolen vehicle?

I know people will say I'm being anal, but it really anoys me when people say VIN Number. I know alost everyone does it, but that doesn't make it correct. VIN stands for 'Vehicle Identification Number' so in effect you are saying 'Vehicle Identification Number Number'. With respect, It should be; 'VIN', 'VI Number' or 'Chassis Number'.

The only people in the English-speaking world who use the term "soccer" for the Association variant of football are the Americans and a dwindling band of rather elderly British ex-public schoolboys (who use it as opposed to "rugger" which is, after all, the proper football game or, more precisely, Rubgy Union is).

Peter , i am not irritated... simply soccer is for a froggy as me a game with 11 players in each team , running after a round ball.... Foot ball is for americans much rough game and the ball is not round if i am right...

Whilst "American Football" is much rougher than "Football", it is played using around three tonnes of padding and around 40 players per team, who take it in turns to prance around for a while. It is a complete bastardisation of Rugby, where real men play.

Having thrown in that particular hand grenade I will retire. I will add I am not a rugby player but the American version uses specialists for specific tasks and is somewhat similar to having two golfers play a round where one drives and one puts.

The French are highly accomplished at rugby, as well as "soccer". It is another game played with a similarly shaped ball to American Football but with minimal protection. I know nothing much about American Football so I'll keep quiet on its virtues and vices.

Apart from the excitement of watching the game, it has the significant virtue in the UK of the law allowing beer to be consumed by the spectators in the stands, while ordinary football is dry (because of old problems with hooligans).

The annual game between England and your compatriots in the Six Nations competition is normally very good and cordial.
