Winter is here...
#1 Winter is here...
Nice to get the winter’s project to a significant milestone.
Engine obviously been out a few times for clutch, clean ups, etc. but never been opened up.
Going to be fascinating to see what we find.
Dropped into 20607 on 6th January 1970 and head or front cover never been off.
We shall see...

Looking forward to hearing all about it Ash. I take it you pulled that lump out from above since the carbs are still on? Or have you removed the engine frames with it (which is how I got mine out since the inlet manifold would not budge no matter what I tried)?

Bit of a hybrid removal Jeremy but it worked a treat.
I plan to completely restore the front end from bulkhead forward so frames are all coming off.
So with that in mind I took the bonnet and picture frames off and pulled the unit out forward.
Getting it back in will be a bit more delicate but a month or two for that!
Cheers
Ash

I went the ‘scary’ route too and it wasn’t great when half way through it I realised my balance bar was preventing me getting the acute angle needed and had to take it off
Still, got there in the end and here’s my engine off to be rebuilt a few weeks ago
Cheers,
Rich

Richard : a bit late to tell you now, but if you follow the Workshop manual and raise the rear of the car , it reduces the angle of dangle required and makes the whole job much easier

Just a thought here (as I am soon to install my 3.8 engine) but as Ash has done to remove his engine ie: take the picture frame out and slide the engine out forwards, would it be possible to loosely install the side frames, push the engine BACK into position, then install the picture frame and bonnet hinge frame, then tighten the assemblies together, then drop the engine onto its mounts? Seems a lot safer than the engine at an angle in the air...
Thanks,
George

Perhaps a little late Christopher, but hopefully useful for the next guy who stumbles across this post.christopher storey wrote: ↑Mon Dec 03, 2018 10:34 amRichard : a bit late to tell you now, but if you follow the Workshop manual and raise the rear of the car , it reduces the angle of dangle required and makes the whole job much easier
I did follow the manual, but didn’t get the back up very high as I wasn’t sure of the best way to support the backend without the IRS in place and the risk of damaging the floor if I supported it in the wrong place etc..

Here's how I did it. Slowly and carefully, but very safe. Step one was to remove bonnet and frames. So I did the front loom, brake pipes etc with the engine in place. I knew the bonnet would need reshimming once the engine was in and the front wheels taking the weight, so I wasn't bothered about disturbing the frames. But the engine had come back from Rob Beere with manifolds fitted and those I did not want to disturb.
Essentially I took it out exactly the same way.
