The two sports cars I regularly drive, the E and a Honda S2000, each has a unique character. One looks like it will do 150 mph. But it wont, and even if it came close I'd be worried about its mechanical integrity, not to say its safety. It rattles and shakes, it handles like a 51 year old car that has loose everything would - challengingly. I drive it because of the way it looks. The other car will do 150 mph, but doesn't look like it can. It looks a little 'hairdresser-y', a look which is only dispelled when you hear it rev to 9,000 through all six of its gears. Then you know it has the hairy chest required of a 150 mph missile. It also has a handling issue, but that's because the huge rear tyres grip right up until they suddenly throw you and the car into the scenery.

I have a 1965 4.2 S1 fhc together with a Triumph TR3a to remind me what sports cars were like before Jaguar launched the E type. They've just been joined by a new Alpine A110 which I'm sure will be a future classic.

I'd probably go for a Sunbeam Tiger if I had space, purely because I love the V8 sound

Malcolm, a great tip if garage space is limited is classic bikes! Ive managed to squeeze a Norton, a Triumph and a Moto Guzzi into a relatively small area! I managed to get this up to three from one, by storing a bike for a mate and not telling my wife when he took it back as well as buying one to replace another but not yet having got round to selling the first! Once theyre under dust sheets they all look the same but theyre all as much fun as the E, per square foot!

Don't disagree about the bikes. Had a Velocette Viper Clubmans, great bike. But I've just got rid of my last bike, a Honda VFR800FR, and don't really want to go back down the bike route. Spent too many days touring on bikes in pounding rain, day after day, to want to do it again! It is great on a nice sunny day though, until you cook in a traffic jam, clad in your protective clothes.

Cor the last time I rode a bike it was tee shirt and jeans . And on the whole only used the back wheel . You got to love an RD 350 LC ....... But I was a lot more invincible in them days
Its a way of life not a hobby

My ‘62 FHC is achingly beautiful to drive and look at.
I’ve had my ‘64 mk 2 midget for 26 years (rebuild 7 years ago)and just can’t part with it ...such fun to drive on little English lanes.
My ‘59 MGA (my first rebuild project) in Iris blue is so evocative of the 50s XKs and underpowered compared with the E but v pretty. My pull handle MGB is my youngest 18 yr old daughter’s favourite!
My wife has an in restored ‘59 frogeye and a VW split screen camper so I don’t have to hide the other purchases from her!
Currently restoring a ‘62 OTS RHD ...I told my wife it was an investment....
All are little pieces of English (+ German) heritage
Harmless fun
