Hi Julian the angle drive should be the same for all 4.2 E types it will be different if an overdrive box is fitted which will be a non e type box......your speedo/rev counter are so far out it can only be a calibration issue.....you really need to start from scratch....rev counter is easy by checking with an external one or multimeter type.....your speedo can be checked with a phone app/gps........Steve

Agree with Steve. As per my earlier post, the photo you show to start with has 200kmh on the clock - was the car REALLY doing 125mph at the time?? The photographer can't not know! If not, the speedo is obviously way out and needs calibrating, despite the comment that it was checked against sat nav.

Good evening dear e-type lovers,

The speedometer is right ! 200 kmh, with one's hands tied behind one's back !!! This speed has been double checked. First with a Sat Nav App (a different one that the one used previously) and secondly thanks to the another car that I was personally driven !! All the policemen in France are too busy with the "Gilets Jaunes" !!

So I suppose that it means that the rev counter is the guilty, isn't it ?

Could a bad earth explain the fact ? I mean, this rev counter is an electric one so a poor earth is maybe in cause...

Julian

Julian, what is the rev counter reading in 4th gear at another speed such as 100km/h or 90 or 70?

Hi Julian...can you give a bit more information.....was this working ok....then started to go wrong.....do you have an electronic ignition module or 123 distributor fitted....and do you have suppressed spark plugs or leads.....your rev counter if standard should work via an inductive loop, picking up pulses from the coil a bad earth on the clock shouldnt affect it ....the low tension circuit basically goes from the ignition key through a looped wire on a plug in the rear of the rev counter and to the coil.....Steve

Ralph,

It's 3000 rpm at 200 km/h (125 mph),
2400 rpm at 160 km/h (100 mph),
2300 rpm at 150 km/h (90 mph),
1800 rpm at 120 km/h (75 mph).

The calibration seems to follow some logic...

Steve,

It has never worked ! In a first time, we thought the reason why was the differential replacement (3.54 to 3.07) so we changed the speedometer for a "new" one (a standard exchange in fact). As it was still not working, we decided to make the rev counter overhauled. No result !

No electronic ignition module either 123 distributor. Classic HT leads. Standard rev counter with the fitting description that you made (indicative loop coming from the ignition key etc...) !

Hi Julian..are you saying it has a 123...if not..it must be down to calibration.....the rev counter just measures the pulses through the coil.....it just counts revs of engine..and dosent need gearbox, diff wheels etc...just for info i asked about electronic ignition suppression because this can affects the rev counter but causes eratic measurements....yours sounds steady........ a replacement or recalibration i think...Steve

No 123 distributor. Sorry if I didn't use "either" as I should !

I also think that the rev counter is the cause of my problems. I will send it one more time and let all you know.

Thanks for all

“1800 rpm at 120 km/h (75 mph).

The calibration seems to follow some logic.”

This is true. It follows the ‘logic’ that your car is geared for 225 mph at red line. I would take a quick look under the IRS: If you see a diff pinion the size of a dinner plate, your rev counter may be OK.
