Correct rear door hinge covers?

Hi,

I have been wondering for a while whether my rear door hinge covers are original fitment.

The parts book states that they are made of PVC (BD28173,BD28174 and BD28175).

Mine are made of steel. The screws that hold them on are thicker than the originals too.

I thought that perhaps a PO had used bigger screws but the holes for the old smaller ones are still in the body panel, but they are not the same spacings as my covers.

I can find no information on steel covers for the Series One, were they fitted to another Series E-Type?

Hi Paul.....those covers are identical to the ones on my 69 S2 2+2.... i recently recovered mine so recognise the bare shell.......unfortunatly this is the only info i can give you.....not sure how the S1 differs...Steve

without looking at the parts book for a 4.2 (mine is a 3.8), it refers to PVC for the decorative material only. The covers themselves are made of steel - they need to be, because I had to pull and stretch the top material quite a bit to get it applied without wrinkles.

Klaus; yes I think you are right, the PVC refers to the covering in the parts manual as there is also a reference to a Moquette cover.

So they are all steel; not sure about the different spacings for the screws though; I will study the different part numbers to see if they are different.

According to Dr. Haddock's latest originality guide, the early 4.2 coupes had moquette-covered hinge covers, with inner door trim material finishing the top edges. This is shown on pp. 295, and I can confirm this, as this was what my very early and unmolested 4.2 (1E30036/built Sept. 1964) had. The covers were steel, and were attached to the body using finishing screws with the appropriate washers.

My second 4.2 FHC (1E32208/late 1965) also had steel covers, but these were covered with vinyl (referenced as PVC in most literature) and the edges finished with that chrome/plastic material. The covers were attached to the body with screws, but short chrome strips were used in lieu of the earlier washers. As with my earlier E-Type, this car had never been apart.

Going off on a tangent here, but if you haven't purchased the latest E-Type Originality Guide, by Thomas Haddock and Michael C. Mueller, by all means do so. It's now hardcover and in color, and definitely an improvement over the previous edition.

The lock cover on mine looks different, but I have 3.8
The hinge covers look the same.

I recognise those tatty original covers! They’re from my ‘63 3.8 fhc.
I had to make patterns from what was left of the covers and hand stitch new ones!
The cover for the hatch latch is a different shape to the 4.2 by the looks of it - not sure about the hinge covers though.

What exactly did you do on the upper edges? Is that edge trim available??

I tried a couple of pvc and fabric covered edging options (as you will see from the pics of them on the worktop compared to the style when fitted to the car) but was never happy with them as the original style is no longer available apparently. I took a bit of the original into Woolies and they found something close to it.

Yes, that looks about right. I suspect that there is a supplier somewhere that does the correct spec, I just couldn’t find them!
