#1 Greetings From Whidbey Island Washington, USA

Post by Motorman » Tue Jan 01, 2019 11:40 pm

Howdy From Washington State,
Brand new to the forum. Sure looks like a great group of enthusiasts. Love Jaguar E Types. My second car at 21 was a 1963 Coupe which I unfortunately had to sell to finance college.

Presently I have my eye on a 1968 E Type (series 2) Coupe in British Racing Green with Black interior. It is numbers matching and is completely original with the exception of an updated alternator and radio.

It has been sitting for almost 20 years so is going to take some $ to get her on the road. The owner (2nd) is going to bring her back to life, as a starting chassis, however I will be paying for the brakes, tires etc.

My initial goal is to make her a “driver” and slowly restore things as I can afford it.

Any thoughts ?
Thanks for your help.

Welcome....sounds like fun. 99.7 % of the bits are available so other than money, skinned knuckles, bits that won't fit and the usual trials when working on old cars, should be a breeze.....keep us all posted

Motorman, good luck with getting that car back on the road. If it has been off the road for so long, then a complete service with new fluids, brake pads, etc. will be most sensible to sort out. Replacing a flexible pipe or two might be needed, too. Say to brake pipes or the clutch slave. Make sure you use the correct coolant/anti-freeze and oil (engine, gearbox, differential). Are you in the JCNA? There will be members close by who will be able to help and advise. Plus you'll get lots of help from this forum. Ask away and I'm sure someone will know the answer.
Please add your name to your signature area and when you've got the car, add that, too. That way when people respond it's nice to have a name and we will know which model you are asking about.

Let us know how you get on

Geoff

Welcome to the party! Whidbey Island is an absolutely beautiful area--lots of nice roads that are perfect for an E-Type.

Thanks for all the well wishes. Signature has been updated.

Your thoughts on restoring a vehicle after it has been ignored for many years hits home. I recently purchased a 1965 Corvair Monsa convertible from a friend. He assured me all it needed was a battery and maybe a tuneup. Sure. Many $$$ later, it is,I believe, a good example of it’s pedigree.

Since I am taking copious notes of what is required to get it back on the road, I trust it will be a labor of love and money.

Thanks again for your help & interest.

Another welcome to the forum, Charles. You appear to be well-experienced in the pitfalls of auto restoration so you know that it is a labor of love to do the work yourself. And with an E type restoration, you can be sure that basketsful of money will be involved. Enjoy the process.

And being a mainly British membership you'll have to get used to us having fun at our cousins across the pond.
Tyres not tires. Labour not labor. Boot not trunk (elephants have trunks!). Bonnet not hood (hoodies, thems wot yoof wear!). All said with tongue firmly in cheek and in friendship
Oh! And we drive on the right side of the road, you drive on the wrong side

I beg to differ, Geoff. Boots are for one's feet, Bonnets are for SWMBO's lovely head, and Wings are for birds. I could go on.

Greetings UK ers,
Thanks for the proper English corrections.
The “right vs wrong” side of the road will always be in debate. Having driven in the UK, Australia & New Zealand I can attest that’s it quite a challenge & not for the faint of heart. However one can get accustomed to anything if you face your fears.
Right ??
