#1 Rear hub carrier - colour?

Post by Malc » Fri Jan 04, 2019 1:57 pm

I’ve got the IRS out and am cleaning and painting (or powder coating) all the bits before reassembly etc. The hub carriers are pretty grimy and don’t scrub up particularly well and look a bit of a contrast to the shiny frame and other bits. Any suggestions as to how these can be made to look good? Is there a particular colour they can be sprayed or will a matt grey or silver do the job (especially bearing in mind, few people will see it (apart from me!).

Hi Malc,

It must stay in aluminium naturel.
No way painted.
Clean them and it will be ok for every body...

Hi Malc.....i recently cleaned up some really bad looking carriers on an xj6.......used gunk and fine brass wire brush....came up ok.....for a like new finish you could bead blast but not too hard as to damage the aluminium....i have even seen them polished but the standard matt looks good.....Steve

Hi Malc
It is very difficult to paint aluminum properly and durably especially when it has been in contact with oil, grease and road pollution for 50 years. It is much easier to maintain if it is left as natural as it was originally.
To clean them use brush and plenty of degreaser. We have "Restom" in France that offers a very good aluminum cleaner but you probably have similar products in England.
If they are disassembled, after degreasing, soda sandblasting or glass beads at about 40/45 psi gives excellent results.
And if I can afford, I think it's better to restore both visible and invisible things, even if you make a concept car E Type.
"The devil is in the details" and there are a lot of little devils in our Type E

And don't use any sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide or other alkaline containing cleaners as they will attack the aluminium.

Get them vapour blasted, probably only £10-15 and provided you wash them once in a while they stay good.

Malc

I used a product called Alubright from Race Glaze

Effective and quite gentle

Being an anorak.... I then sprayed the hubs with clear lacquer....

I’m doing my second IRS at present
Bead blast them and that’s all
Lacquering is ok BUT can yellow over time

Just leave them natural

I just give mine a clean with some brake cleaning spray and s cloth when I remove the wheels for any reason

Thanks everyone - I have used Alubright which did a grand job in shifting a lot of the dirt so I’m going to leave it as is - not pristine but clean.

I gently bead blasted mine and left them that way.

If I was doing them again I would bead blast them and clear passivate using a non-chromium or trivalent chromium process such as SurTec 650 or Iridite NCP.

Stuart
