#1 Looking for information on an early car

Post by Jonnie » Wed Jan 09, 2019 7:04 pm

Hi,

I’m trying to hunt down the original owner of a car and I’ve hit a wall.

We know it was used as the demonstrator for Henly’s in London for July to September. It was then owned from September 1961 to November 1983 by one person, the only information from that period was an “mot” certificate from 1972 where the car only had 778 miles on it. This makes me wonder who was able to afford such a car in 1961 and only drive is 778 miles in 11 years.

Does anyone know of news articles from the era or perhaps a photograph of the dealerships from that time? I assume such an early car must be documented somewhere but so far nothing has come up

Thanks,
Jonnie

Little on xkedata.com
Was 778 miles actually 100778, which at 10,000 a year could be so?

What is your association with this car?

Hi Geoff,

It’s possible although it seems unlikely the car would have been in such good condition after that kind of mileage in a short period of time. The car is only on around 11k now.

The car is currently my grandfather’s, he was the one that put the info into xkedata.com. I’ve said I’d help find some info on the car but so far come up with nothing.

The JDC 2011 edition of the Directory of Vehicles and Owners shows 850052 as being registered as 231 471 and being white in colour. I assume the reg number means it is supposed to be in foreign lands or maybe cloned?

I believe that entry into that edition is incorrect. The car has a Jaguar heritage certificate stating the original colour being Opalescent Gunmetal as well as all other info matching.

Where 232 471 has cropped up from is a mystery, someone tried adding the same incorrect data on XKE Data a few weeks ago with no other supporting information.

That's my grandfather and grandmother that I'm doing the research on behalf of. They're the current owners and we know the previous owners from 1983 to now, but it's the 1961-1983 owner that we are trying to track down.

Hi Jonnie...im not sure if the service is still available but you used to be able to contact the DVLA and for a small fee they would send you out copies of all the past info they hold on the vehicle.....there was a set form to send in....could be worth you(the owner) contacting them...here you go..just found it https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... -a-vehicle .Steve

Thanks Steve. We’ve tried with the DVLA although they wouldn’t release any information.
