#1 Wire Wheel Spanner
Having just had my wire wheel spinners (Federal Type) re chromed, I can't quite bring myself to use the original spanner on the new chrome.
Does anyone know if there is a Federal spanner available that will not mark the spinners?

Hi Simon...yes you can get an aluminium tool...you will need a large socket and breaker bar to use it....lots of info in this thread....Lionel is the chap that makes them..his contact number is in the last post......for the standard federal style tool i put a thick rag over the spinner then fit the tool (its tight).....then use the hammer....Steve

Just to add that I've one of the Lionel adapter tools and they do a fine job. Steve's comment about a rag is important.

I know steve but the top quality isn't cheap.
I'm always nervous when the "same" thing cost 3 times less price.
I sell quality tools among others and I see almost every day the "same" 3 or 10 times less price.
But it seems to work pretty well for its price so...

The torque which Oldtimertools recommends is 258ft.lb

I bought the one which cost 169.00€ and it's not a big price for the tool I received.
They are obliged to give a so big torque.
1 - They don't want any responsability if there is an accident.
2 - They say by this hight torque that their tool can resist to this.
Intelligent marketing.

Since the Oldtimers tool is only suitable for fitting the spinners, what do you use for removal?
In fact, when they say the forces required to remove are higher than for fitting, this proves that the spinners tend to self tighten, as discussed previously on this forum.

I've not read the debate on self tightening of spinners.
However, if you tighten any nut to a torque and leave it for a time, it will invariably require a greater break-out torque to undo it. All to do with lube being squeezed out (possibly) but more significantly, static friction (force needed to get it moving) is always greater than moving friction. (going back to physics classes/lab )

Loosening torque is always less than tightening torque due to overcoming friction as the nut etc starts to clamp the joint and then putting stretch into the threaded fastener. Engineering fact.
The reason for undoing often being more difficult than tightening is usually down to corrosion etc.

I think I'll stick to my wooden spinner saver.

Funny!
When a key is usually indicated to tighten 1/2" bolts, what do you use to loosen them?
If you are happy with your piece of wood, it's ok for me. No problems at all.

My point exactly! What is the point of having one tool to tighten and another method of loosening? It's a waste of money and tool box space.

Loosening using a torque wrench will change the setting and not be correct for tightening. 100 foot lbs on the are point will be different and need 95 or 105 foot lbs to move to the 100 foot lbs reading. You will have to calibrate the torque wrench again.
