Which anti-freeze
#1 Which anti-freeze
Just wondering which anti-freeze people use in their Es?
Fitting a new rad, so will need to refill.

#2 Re: Which anti-freeze
Malcolm,
I believe it will depend partly on what's already in your system, because I understand that mixing blue (glycol based) and red (organic acid) can cause big problems. I was starting with a totally clean slate (rebuilt engine, new rad and hoses) but I went for the trad Bluecol anyway.
IIRC it was moderator Steve who confirmed I'd made the right choice....

#4 Re: Which anti-freeze
Thanks both. What came out was blue coloured, so I'll use bluecol.
Looking on Amaazon, there are TWO bluecols, widely different in pricing.
This one, at £34 for 5 litres (and I guess I'll need two?)
and this one at less than £20 for 5 litres.
Anyone know the difference - apart from price! Are they both ok?

Personally..... I use Fernox, its really designed for domestic heating systems but works down to -30 and is also friendly to alumininium, copper and steel. It also has a rust convertor in it. A lot of my vintage car chums swear by it and I have it in my 1935 Riley Special too. no problems with it so far and you can buy it in a lot of places.

#6 Re: Which anti-freeze
I use bluecol glycol based antifreeze and change annually. The difference between the cheap and the less cheap may be that the more costly needs diluting and the other is ready to go. I use the stuff that needs diluting and do roughly 50:50. It does work out cheaper. I use filtered rain water (I have a plentiful supply)...otherwise best to use distilled unless your tap water is very soft.

Thanks, but both of the above are concentrated and recommend a 50:50 mix. Think I've found the difference though!
The Amazon sellers don't tell you, but if you go to Bluecol (who sell both) they say the cheaper one "isn't suitable for classic or vintage engines"
Under the first (more expensive) one, they say suitable for ALL engines, all materials, contains no acid derivatives - guess that's the difference
I've ordered the expensive one.

You have ordered the correct one. It's the two year blue.malcolm wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2019 2:08 pmThanks, but both of the above are concentrated and recommend a 50:50 mix. Think I've found the difference though!

As said before mix 50/50 with distilled water.
