#1 What music sums up the e-type? Top 5?

Post by skiday » Fri Oct 29, 2010 10:37 pm

I feel that, unless you are just listening to the exhaust note, to really immerse yourself in a car, you have to have the right music playing. In my Fiat Coup? I like Italian opera. To have Radio 2 on just doesn't make a journey special, no matter how much I like it normally. So now that I have a radio in 'Ernie' with an mp3 function I was wondering what to put on my stick. Would you like to suggest a top 5, or indeed as many tracks as you wish which epitomise the e-type in music. What evokes the era and image of a seris 1 or 2, which would be different from the glam rock era of the S3. Five tracks, which seem to fit for me, might be:

 Green Onions - Booker T & the MGs
 Can't Take My Eyes Off You - Andy Williams,
 Always There To Remind Me - Sandie Shaw
 You've Really Got Me ? Kinks
 Day Tripper ? Beatles

It seems pointless to repeat, so please try to think of tracks that others haven't suggested.

I was born in '61 so I need guidance on sixties music from those who were old enough to be paying attention at the time - Thanks

Hi,

I was a teenager in the sixties complete with a Lambretta TV 200.
Music I would suggest Moody Blues, Black Sabbath, Cream, Led Zepplin, Stones, Jeff Beck to name but a few brilliant bands
Kind Regards John

In 61 they where still dragging themselves out of the 50's. I think you will have to move into the mid sixties for some E type music

Blimey! Now thats a list to be going on with. Don't feel the need to compete though - more top 5s please.

Although Tony I applaude your response in it's length, rather than just all and every song of a particular year, I'm thinking more in terms of music that creates an evocative feeling to compliment the e-type. Suppose you at a party in the 1969 and (as if) Twiggy or Mary Quant or Lulu wanted a lift home and you had time enough for just 5 tracks from the whole of the 60s to impress on the way back to her place - what would you put on?

Dead Man's Curve - Jan & Dean (1964)

Image

"I was cruisin' in my Stingray late one night,
When an XKE pulled up on the right
He rolled down the window of his shiny new Jag,
And challenged me then and there to a drag
I said "You're on buddy -- my mill's running fine,
Let's come off the line now at Sunset and Vine
But I'll go you one better, if you've got the nerve,
Let's race all the way -- to Dead Man's Curve"
(Dead Man's Curve) is no place to play
(Dead Man's Curve) you'd best keep away
(Dead Man's Curve) I can hear 'em say:
"Won't come back from Dead Man's Curve"
The street was deserted late Friday night;
We were buggin' each other while we sat out the light
We both popped the clutch when the light turned green,
You shoulda heard the whine from my screamin' machine
I flew past La Brea, Schwab's and Crescent Heights,
And all the Jag could see were my six taillights
He passed me at Doheny then I started to swerve,
But I pulled her out and there we were - at Dead Man's Curve
(Dead Man's Curve) is no place to play
(Dead Man's Curve... [sounds of skids and crashes] )
(Spoken): "Well, the last thing I remember, Doc,
I started to swerve
And then I saw the Jag slide into the curve
I know I'll never forget that horrible sight,
I guess I found out for myself that everyone was right"
Won't come back from Dead Man's Curve...
(Dead Man's Curve) is no place to play
(Dead Man's Curve) you'd best keep away
(Dead Man's Curve) I can hear 'em say:
"Won't come back from Dead Man's Curve"
(Dead Man's Curve) is no place to play
(Dead Man's Curve) you'd best keep away
(Dead Man's Curve) I can hear 'em say:
"Won't come back from Dead Man's Curve" (fade)

And here's the video:

Our Car Club - Beach Boys 1963 (so many of this Album's song titles are evocative of the E-Type in period)

Image

"I've been cruisin' round the town now with the guys for quite a while
We been thinkin' 'bout starting up a club that shows some class and style
And we'll get the finest cars

We got a Deuce Coupe, a Stingray, a rent job and an XKE
(We'll start a car club)
We'll be the fastest at the drags man we'll really cut some low ETs
(We'll start a car club)
And wipe out the other clubs

We'll set a meet and get a sponsor and collect some dues
And you can bet that we'll have our jackets on wherever we cruise"

Skiday,

All I did was cut and past from the internet. If you just type in music from the 60's or what ever year you want they are all there. You can even ask for the Best Ever Driving Songs and they will list them to.

Angus's choice wins it for me - the ultimate E-type track sung by one of the greats - Matt Monroe. Why didn't I think of it!

Works for me too! Maybe a spot of Louis Armstrong 'We Have All the Time in the World' to go with it.

Then, to wake up the passenger, it has to be Led Zepplin 'Dazed and Confused', rounded off with a spot of Pink Floyd.....'Set the controls for the Heart of the Sun' to continue the cruise.

I'm right back there

Try pulling away from a garage with Steppenwolf's 'Born to be Wild' blasting out - that will really lift your heart and lower your right foot! The ultimate road trip music.
