Angus’s upper wishbone inserts

Hi chaps
Just fixing the “boots” onto my old upper wishbones which have Angus’s new cups fitted ...I had the wishbones powder coated as this as worked well on my coupe

The metal ring tha came with pinged off v easily so I used safety wire which seems to take twisting and tension very well..this seems to work very well

Good idea - the steering rack bellows was secured to the pinion end housing by tie wire C15211 so it is in keeping. More info here: http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?p=65653#p65653

Angus Moss (Mossjaguar.com) will take out your worn upper wishbone ball joint cups, ream them slightly and fit “fit and forget” cups and new ball joint.
Great and personal service..he’s happy to talk on the phone.

Are these the same as the ones SNGB etc sell? Lime green plastic cup?

Hi Andrew
I’m pretty sure SNG B sell you a new wishbone with insert all built up, although I’m not sure if the cup is metal or a nylon replacement.

Angus takes YOUR original wishbone, machines out the old metal cup, replaces it with a hard nylon insert and puts a new ball in. It is sent back with a clear cup which you then wire on yourself.

I went with Angus because of reputation, the fact that I wanted to use the original wishbones and I liked the personal service he offers. Nice product

How is the insert secured within the machined out space in either of these cases ? , and are shims still used ? Perhaps either Julian Barratt and/or Angus can tell us, please

Hello Christopher,
Following is the general assembly of the unit supplied by SNG Barratt.

If the device used by Angus is the same as supplied by SNG Barratt, the machining entails more than just "ream them slightly" as described by Robbie. The original diameter where the original metal cup fits is ø1.236” – ø1.234” , the OD of the Nylon Insert is ø1.4”

Following is my developed profile and graphic image of the resulting CNC tool path.

If the machining is done correctly, shims need not be required.

Bill : thank you for that. As I understand it, then the nylon insert is prevented from coming out by an interference fit ? Or am I misunderstanding your drawings ?

Hello Christopher,
It can't come out the top as the assembly is held in place by a cir-clip; the same as the original system. It can't come out the bottom, as the machined cavity is blind except for the slot through which the tapered and threaded pin of the Ball Pin passes to engage with the Stub Axle carrier.

Basically, the metal spherical surface that the Ball originally ran on south of the Ball's equator is replaced with part of the Nylon Insert and the original metal cup that sat north of the Ball's equator has also been replaced with the Nylon Insert with the whole assembly being held in place with a cir-clip. The fit of the insert in the parallel part of the cavity is a slight interference fit, but nothing like what would be required to retain it.

Bill : my stupidity I'm afraid ; I had forgotten that it would be put in through the top of the wishbone ball housing
