#1 Cooling Fan Relay location

Post by mach2andy » Wed Aug 14, 2019 4:38 pm

Some time ago I discovered a mystery bracket in one of my boxes of bits, and have just discovered that it is to mount the cooling fan relay to the picture frame. But exactly where? Can someone post a pic please? Ta.

Ash - You can probably see one of your wiring diagrams in this pic? Thanks again. It's been invaluable.

Mine is on the top of the picture frame, other side to the coil.

Glad it's been helpful Andy - project looking great.

This photo should help (bit of non-original chrome on mine).

cheers
Ash

The JCNA guise shows it where Ash has his, but with the bracket facing up. The bracket on mine mounted on the other side of the frame, but may well be wrong as some of the fan wiring and relay was missing when I got the car.

Thanks for that Tom. Very interesting. I will have to reposition mine.

I am missing the fan motor plastic covers too.

It never ends!!

Ahh, sharing the inboard coil mounting bracket screw. That explains why the hole in the bracket is so large.
Thanks everyone.

I have looked at the JCNA document and all the Series 2 's I have seen have had the relay mount as per Ash's pic. The parts book also shows the bracket as per Ash's pic.

Regards,
Greg

Interesting. In the S2 originality sticky thread, it shows it facing down too, but that car doesn’t have the coil bracket as the coil is on the cylinder head. Maybe it’s wrong on the JCNA guide then, or maybe it changes when the coil moves to the front frame?

There's no logic in having it pointing up and the original relays aren't waterproof so you wouldn't want one of those ending up pointing upwards or it would fill with water.

On cars with A/C the bracket is extended so another relay can sit below to turn on the fans when the A/C is turned on.

On my car which I have confidence but not certainty is as original in this area has it all pointing down like Ash's car.

I went for a more muted colour tone, and for the upward pointing option. The fan motor connections are marked 1 & 2 but theres no guidance on the wiring diagram as to where the supply & earth wires go. I'm assuming if I have this wrong, the fans will run backwards?

Andy, I think you'll find that you'll have to fit the bracket the proper way, ie pointing downwards as when you come to fit the radiator and fans, the rear of the fan motor will foul the relay the way you've got it.

Hi John
You're absolutely right. It fouls the RH fan motor. Over it goes.
