I ve got a second hand part but i dont know the brand/type of connector which has to used here

Unless you are going for 100% originality, I made a replacement plate from 10mm alu with a modern fan switch - which takes 6mm spade lugs.

Thank you to post an answer.
I started from so far on my restoration that I’ll not have a 100% original car anyway. I’ve an XJS engine (I'm still questionning myself :scratchheadyellow: about the ECU to be used. We already have exchanged about that)and a Getrag gearbox. So I’m already very far from an original S3.
Could you please share pics from your modification ?
Do you use more modern fans with 2 speeds ? I do use 2 WV Jetta ones as proposed by coocatcorp:

Hi Michel

My car is parked at my local Jag dealer but I will try to pop around to get pics for you.

I use the original fans. There is IMO no need for high power VW fans or the high speed they offer .... IF .... the cooling system as a whole is good and correct. Consider that my car has aircon and is being used here in South Africa where temperatures in summer go to mid and high 30's degC. If you WANT to use the dual speed, you do get fan switches that have three terminals and two temperature ranges for activation. Just select one of those and add another relay (that can handle the current!!!)

The most important aspect of the cooling system is that the thermostats MUST close the bypass circuit fully. I think it was Marek that discovered that modern thermostats do not move as far as required by the thermostat housing on the Jag. The housing require a movement of about 42mm and most thermostats only move about 40mm. I attached 4mm alu washers to the bypass plate of the thermostat, but raising the floor of the housing is also a method used.

I see that you still have to fit rubber flaps to you radiator. Please ensure that the horizontal flaps are mounted at the top (I've recently seen one - at a local reputable restorer - where one flap was mounted at the bottom, which could cause the flap to curl over when hot and then the fans would just draw air from behind the radiators, not through it.) Also the flap must be able to seal easily all around the edge.

Hi Philip,

yes I will take care of your remark about the rubber flaps.
But finally the holes from the rivets are alredy at the right place.
I'll have a look to the thermostat as you discribe.

I have certainly bought them with AutoSparks looms in the past. Perhaps try SNGB or XKS Unlimited; you need an Otter Switch Connector.

Hello Philip,

have you got back your car?
I've a question on the rubber flaps. What about the thickess? I do have a rubber plate to be cut but it is a 3mm and it sounds to me a bit too thick.

The flaps on my car is 1.5mm thick. 3mm would be too thick.

I have the VW Jetta 2 speed fans fitted to my S3 OTS as well. Fit exactly into the fan blade shroud and perfect fit for the fan mounts. They have been fitted for 10 years and no problems.

Looks good!

Suggestion : apply power to fans (high speed) and check what happens to the flaps. Consider that in the car, the flaps will be much more flexible at operating temp.
