#1 Front indicator lens.

Post by Fspp369 » Sun Oct 06, 2019 2:59 pm

Can anyone enlighten me PLEASE.
The pictures show inside and outside of my S3 indicator lens'.
Why do they have grey enamel paint on half of the plastic?
The replacements have nothing, they are translucent over all of the surface.
The light unit is capable of shining thro all of the available area.
Discovered during the start of my first winter spruce up and renovation with the new "shiney thing" in the workshop

Someone may have tried to replicate a white parking/driving light on half of the lens. I believe that was regulatory in some countries. My US lenses were all amber as shown in the first picture.

Hi,
Don’t think that was the case, as any light going through would be yellow as it’s still got to go through the actual lens, also the paint is grey and opaque. But thanks for your thoughts.

In fact it’s not very apparent but, the top pic is of the outside of the same lenses, ie the ones removed.

In my tribulations with the indicators I have also found that the lens to unit seal 12426: is no longer listed.
Does anyone know of a source?
If this fails then I’ve made a set of seals, which seem to work well and stand up to a hosepipe, from a seal available from ALDI! For the grand sum of £0:65 !!!!!
If anyone is interested then I’ll post some pics...haven’t got any yet.

You nailed it. As I stated, someone attempted, unsuccessfully I should have added. If not that it could have been to block light. Who knows, there have been some really weird attempts of various so-called fixes presented in this forum and Jag-Lovers.

Track through the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations (as amended) on the government website and go back to the draft Statutory Instrument for 1973 and I think you'll have your answer. When joining the common market, the minimum height went from imperial to metric and also went up a fair bit. The new minimum proposed height was slap bang down the centre line of the below-the-bumper indicators and so this may have been a way of pre-empting having to retool anything and still comply with possible new legislation.

kind regards
Marek
