Good evening all.

I'm an owner of an E-Type and about to embark on a full restoration of the car. I'm carrying this out with a friend who is a restoration specialist (when we get the time).

I have alot of questions before this happens, as I feel we are walking into a territory where only exacting standards will be accepted and since I have what we believe to be a rare vehicle, we definitely want to get it right.

This is the car spec;

Car: 1967 RHD 4.2 open 2 seater with hard top
Exterior Colour: British Racing Green
Interior: Black leather
Reg: HN D1E
Mileage: 44,000
Owners: 2

1st question: Is value effected if a recognised restoration company completes the restoration rather than yourself?

Hi....no its not a trick question....im just trying to understand what model car and spec you have.....i have never heard of a S1 4.2 V12..... a S1 either came with a 3.8 or a 4.2 engine....both straight 6cyl ....S3 cars came with a V12 engine.....you said you believe you have a rare car.....but i dont understand what you actually have......Steve

The point is, Jaguar never built a 4.2 litre V12. They never built any V12's in the 1960's either.

So what you claim you've got is largely unfathomable and, if correct, is likely to be a home brewed one off special.

We are all keen to learn more because what you describe is unlikely to be genuine.

Some photos would be good to see.

For what reason do you believe it is rare vehicle ?

Actually a two owner S1 with 44,000 miles on the clock is quite rare!

Anyway Michael, please go ahead and fire away with any questions and do not be put off by the pedants. I have had a lot of people look under the bonnet of my S1 and believe it is a V12 because of the twin cams.

So to answer your first question. Value will be affected by the quality of the work rather than the name over the door. If you want to get full value photograph and document each stage, keep copies of all invoices and be prepared for any prospective buyer to have a acknowledged expert prepare a report after going over it. Don't cut corners, use best practice and if in doubt ask here.

If I may also offer some advice : I see that the car has not been on the road since before 1980, and has not been declared as SORN . Before you spend a lot of money on it, it would be wise to regularise the position with the DVLA , get it declared SORN in your name, and ensure that there will be no difficulties putting it back o the road when your work is finished. If you need any advice on this, Keith Vincent of the JEC is the acknowledged expert on all this

It doesnt need to be SORN, its in exempt status. Thought we'd had it covered previously. Cheers anyway.

I’m with Christopher on this one. My understanding is that legally it needs to either be taxed (even if no money changes hand because it is a historic vehicle) or it needs to be SORNed.

This should be quite simple.....If a vehicle is not taxed or insured it must be SORN.....over 40 year old cars can have MOT exemption if you apply...Although an Historic vehicle is classed as Tax exempt.you still need to apply for road tax even though it is nil cost...full details on https://www.gov.uk/sorn-statutory-off-road-notification .......Steve
PS...Michael.....Your vehicle has a big red flag against it on the Dvla website showing it as untaxed...thats why one of our members advised you to check it......we are only trying to help
