#1 Steering Wheel

Post by tonyabacus » Sun Nov 10, 2019 1:30 am

Can someone post a couple of photographs of the steering wheel with the brushed effect which I think was standard on the S2. A close up to get an idea of just how much brushing was done and also the direction of the brushing relative to the spokes please.
Thanks

Hi Tony.....I have never seen a noticable brushing effect....more of a dull finnish rather than highly polished..... I dont know what they looked like straight from the factory 50 years ago.......Steve

Thanks both, checked out the factory fit pictures David, but can’t get the definition to see the degree of brushed effect.
So still needing a close up please

Hi Tony...you learn something every day...like i said iv never noticed a brushed effect but than have never really looked that close....this is the original wheel removed from my 69....very light brushed effect running along the length of each spoke and running around the boss...Steve

Steve/Simon
Thanks both for the pics, perhaps now I can restore my wheel, which someone has tried to polish, but is not correct for my S2. Steve, I take it the brushed effect is radially around the hub, as this pic was not quite so clear?
Thanks
Tony

Hi Tony..when you say hub...if you mean as in my 3rd photo yes its radial around the steering boss....on the front where the 3 spokes meet the center its not radial...each spoke is brushed straight towards the center and overlaps....Steve

Try clicking on the photos to enlarge them - the one with the hub is quite big and you can see the detail.

Brushed or dull polished aluminium is produced by unidirectionally polishing the metal with a 120–180 grit belt or wheel then softening with an 80–120 grit grease free compound or a medium abrasive belt or pad. It is likely the metal stock was bought in that state from the stock holder before the wheel spider was stamped. in other words the parts were not finished or detailed after being received by the Factory.

Hi David...i have no way of knowing if the brush effect on my wheel is original.....however if it is it must have been done after the blank was cut from a sheet becaus the brushing is allong the length of each spoke and cris crosses at the center....if cut from a brushed sheet it would all be in the same direction.....Steve

I was thinking the same Steve. All the brushing on mine runs the long length of the spokes so as you say, probably done after initial cutting.

Thanks Steve, Simon, David

It seemed that the hub was "brushed" a little lighter than the wheel, so I wanted to make sure, also your comments about finishing after the pattern was cut also seems logical given the comments. My wheel does not appear to have been touched on the underside and has what looks like a lacquer on it, presumably if this is original it was to give some sort of long term protection to the finish. The front of my wheel has had an attempt to polish it, so the brush marks are virtually obliterated.

Has anyone else got this lacquer finish?
Thanks also David for the process.
Tony
