#1 Engine rebuild - almost done!..

Post by ysmalkie » Wed Mar 11, 2020 10:55 pm

I wanted to thank all who helped me in the rebuild - my very first engine build :-)..

I am still missing few bits and pieces, however almost there...

Comments are most welcome - have I missed something??

I do know I need:
- 4 clips for the breather pipe
- generator bracket spacer
- oil stick hold down and the spacer
- coil lower bracket
- Champion ignition spark plug caps
- oil pressure sender
- coil label

Also, I am not sure if there is supposed to be some extension tube for the oil dip stick and the felt seal from SNG seems really big...

Tadek,

NIce!

Instead of the felt seal, I have been using electrical heat shrink to form the seal.

I start with a short tube, heat it on, then shrink on a few longer tubes to form a tapering seal which plugs the hole in the tube nicely.

Beautiful job Tadek! I am hugely impressed.
Re: oil pressure sender - when Rob Beere rebuilt my engine, he fitted a new (electrical) one but cautioned me that they are notoriously unreliable. Later Angus persuaded me of the benefits of replacing it with a hydraulic one and corresponding gauge, which is working perfectly.

Very nice job Tadek....well done....when you fill with oil make sure you use the correct measured amount rather that useing the dipstick marks.....then mark this level on the dipstick.....Steve

I am not sure if there is supposed to be some extension tube for the oil dip stick
There is no extension tube as such, but there is an insert in the block that when fitted, is flush with the top.
Yours is probably already there.

Your coil is a Lucas SA12 or HA12 sports coil, I am not quite sure which, I have one myself.

There is information on it here: viewtopic.php?t=2006&start=170

and where to obtain the lables.

Thank you all for the kind words :-)

It's SA12 - the exciting part is that it's from June '63 and my car is from October, so a pretty good match :-)

So Steve, when I fill 8.5 l of oil this should be the maximum or middle on the dipstick?

As for the oil pressure sender - I actually found a NOS about a year ago - I was overwhelmed with joy (photos ended up even on the Original Fit), however when I tested it recently it turned out it does not work....

Hi Tadek...im not sure where the correct amount of oil will come up to on your dipstick......but where ever it comes to make a small mark.......this will then be the ideal level for you to maintain.....Steve

On my dipstick the collar which covers what’s left of the felt pad can be moved up and down the dipstick. This allowed me to correct the reading to the ...er.... correct level. On my 4.2 it is exactly 10inches from the tip of the dipstick.

The xk engine is a work of art, particularly when painted & polished and even out of the car, it looks like it means business. When I first saw mine in it’s rebuilt state in the display area of the restoration shop, I just stood and shook my head. Silly really, as I’d seen loads of pics of shiny rebuilt engines, but in the flesh and knowing that it’s yours makes a huge difference.
Great work.

Why don't you built a mini jig to put your engine on ?
Built a small wiring.
Connect the minimum of the exhaust.
COnnect the radiator.
Connect you fuel pump to a jerrycan and start your engine out of the car.
You could also validate your clutch and gearbox.
If here is a fault you'll can repair it really mor easily.
I did that and after some lite corrections, the engine run perfectly into the car.

I bought a cheap rev conter connected to the coil
From the car I used the water temp and oil pressure dash, the power contact and the push to start the engine.
I also used a switch for an extra fan on the radiator.
Thats all

I have made these:

for the damper. Mine has a diameter of 228mm and it is designed for this size.

I am happy to share a TIFF so you can print a decal yourself or I can send it to you (once the post offices open for international post).

Feel free to PM me for the TIFF.

Beautiful job Tadek - congrats.

As others have already said, there is nothing as beautiful as a prepared E Type engine.

Don't get worried about the dipstick marks - its a dark art. When it's back in the car with exactly 8.5l of oil in it. Dip it somewhere on a level surface and that's your mark. Wherever it is on the stick.

cheers
