No mods needed, no rubbing and no issues fitting in the spare wheel well. They look painted rather than powder coated and there are some patches where the paint has been chipped off, showing the red primer, so I would attend to those areas if I was keeping them. I’m hoping to swap them for the chromes tomorrow so I’ll photo everything and you can see what you think. I’ll price them once I’ve had a good look at them all.

Long story but ended up buying 4 as new dunlop chrome wire wheels for £550.

Lets hope I look after these a bit better! I think the problem was that I hadn't dried my previous set properly when putting away in the garage. I may also avoid using a pressure washer on them.

Why is it never simple!?

I got my lovely new wire wheels today and put them on. I was very pleased with myself until I drove it. The Zeus oversized brake calipers are "just" touching the wheel. The previous wire wheels must have been slightly different. I either need a very slender spacer to bring the wheel out a bit or I need to grind the caliper which I really don't want to do. Do spacers exist for e-type wire wheels? what would you guys do?

You can get a 3mm spacer from Realm Engineering.....fits between hub and disc and then space your caliper then just hope its enough or grinder time Steve

I've noticed that the caliper was grinded before by the previous owner. I wonder if it already has a spacer on it but the owner had to grind as well. Are the spacers easy to fit?

May be easier to increase the grind on the calipers as they are already showing. Can you grind in situ and what would I need as I don't have a grinder. What I mean is what type of grinder would do the job?

Did you get the Zeus iron calipers or the alloy ones? If the latter you would be better off putting them on eBay and buying the former.

Hi Jonny.....your problem does need a close look at......is it happening on both sides of the car....you purchased used wheels....is it just one wheel or do they all rub(try them all on the front).so is it a bent wheel......the hub is in a fixed position mounted on the stub axel with its bearings.....the spacer i refer to fits between hub and disc so actually moved disc inboard then you would need to move the caliper inboard.....a 4in disc cutter with a grinding disc on will do the job or a dremmel or just a good file...Steve

Seem to remember this happening elsewhere, calipers were sent back for modifying.

Thanks Steve, I tried the spare wheel which is one of the original wheels and that is a papers width from the caliper but clears. The new one rubs on it slightly. Its not the wheels its the after market brake calipers. The used wheels had hardly been used and were supplied by someone who makes wire wheels so they should be good anyway and I trust him. I'm going to buy a grinder .. never used one before. Does this one look ok?

Yes that looks ok.....but first with the wheel off is the caliper mounted so the disc is central....there could be scope to slightly shim the caliper over....pm sent....Steve

Hi Jonny....best to wait a while for more input just to see what others have done or start a new post on Zeus calipers...be cautious with a grinder you could go through.......Steve

Are you seriously going to hand grind a caliper to make it fit something it doesn't fit to? I would take it to a machine shop who will put it onto a lathe bed accurately FLAT so they can mill the correct amount off. The same will go for a spacer. You can't guarantee it will be level if you do this by hand. In fact you can more or less guarantee that it won't be.

Do consider how tight this has to be bolted in - it absolutely must be flat. Then consider the massive force that joint and those bolts are under every time you hit the brakes. Running skew fitted DIY brakes is madness.

And the machine shop option will probably be cheaper than the purchase cost of a decent power tool.

kind regards
Marek

Surely that vented disc isn't standard!

I would review the whole set up because it just looks wrong to me.

Do you have curly or flat hub wheels? I suspect the former and if you fit flat hub your problem might disappear without resorting to any kind of vandalism on the brake calipers.

Stuart

The brake set up isn't wrong. Its a Zeus upgrade kit that includes the disc. Although not his, Peter Cooper from Coopercraft works on the car and he hasn't mentioned that it looks wrong at all. I'm not changing the wire wheels again! Each wire wheel will vary slightly so going to swap them around to see if they clear the caliper.

You do realise that wire wheels have an off set and a backspaceing and the center hubs can differ...this effects the spoke position ...would be worth knowing how your originals compare to your new ones.....all these details can be looked up on the MWS website ...just for info this is the type of info im refering to...note its a hub from a 16in wheel but just for referance

I assumed Johnny was talking about touching the inside of the rim, not the hub?
