On both my car and the picture in factory fit of car 881640, there is a spring present in the metal housing for the brake master cylinders (see highlighted picture below). However, there is no reference to the spring in the June 1963 J30 Parts Catalogue (see plate 26 below). Can someone please shed some light on what the purpose of the spring is and, additionally, where the bottom of it should mount to?

I have seen this before and now trying to remember.
I am sure it was a modification for the brake pedal return. ?? Possibly a service mod.

It's there on both my 3.8s.
It's a return spring for the lever so it doesn't press in the little valve and also acts to secure the castellated nut.

That is great. Thank you. Before my time on the forum and this had not come up on my searches.splosh wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 10:24 pmI was right...... found it here.... back in 2015

I recently had sight of a pretty original 3.8 undergoing maintenance and took a few photos. The picture below shows the spring is present (top right hand corner of photo), and from the car's dated Dunlop Master Cylinder tags, it was built after May 1962.
