AFAIK , the foam ( or more accurately felt) seal should go on top of the radiator stoneguard, not the radiator itself

I have never yet seen a car with one, ( but I am not very familiar with S1.5) but frankly it seems rather pointless, since the only object is to force air through the radiator, and it can still go round the sides . I certainly would not regard it as a priority - my S2 has not had one in the 15 years I have had it!

If Jaguar put a seal on there was probably a very good reason for it given the penny pinching Mr Arthur Whittaker was in charge of purchasing! For ?20 you may as well put it on if only from the originality point of view.

I stick to my guns on this. I do not believe this is an original part. The car which Frances has used as an example ( just added to XKE data by the way ) has no stoneguard and thus no felt seal above it . This looks to me like a bodge to overcome that problem . If anyone has a Haddock book it may reveal whether they were fitted to S1.5 at the time

Nothing in Haddock on the subject but the SC Parts catalogue (which is excellent in its detail) list the part number as BD31996 which is a Jaguar one given that, for example, part BD36788 is listed by SNG as "E-Type S2 Genuine Jaguar bonnet".

David : most interesting. Barratt's do not show anything , but Manners do,(although not from stock) and at ?24 it's more substantial than the V12 seal which they list as BD34365. It sounds as though there is such a part which fills the gap between the later ( lower than S1) radiator and the bonnet

It was definitely used. You can see it in some of the open bonnet views in the the Brooksland Books Ultimate Portfolio road tests articles, IIRC most easily spotted in Road and Tracks test of the '69 S2 FHC. The stone guard is still used. Obviously it is meant to maximize the volume of incoming air through the radiator core. Perhaps it is meant to help when stuck in traffic to increase the effectiveness of the fans when stopped or moving slowly.

When I fitted a stoneguard to my '62 I used a length of foam insulation of the type used on 15mm domestic copper plumbing pipe along the top edge rather than buy the "correct" part. Cost nothing since I already had some in the shed and although it may not be "correct" it does the job.

You'll find clear shots of it on p.88 of DSJ's book (B&W), and p.72 of Philip Porter's Collector's Originality Guide (colour).

The JCNA guide says that grey ones are 'not correct' and that they should instead be tan. Admittedly grey looks better than tan, the JCNA guide is not always infallible, and as long as it soes the job it's mean to do with the bonnet shut you can't see it anyway...

Definitely tan coloured, the guide is correct. My late series one (1968) still had its original foam seal when I bought it and it was tan coloured the same material and colour as the insulating foam on the top of the gearbox.
