Post by phoenix » Thu Dec 10, 2020 10:40 am

Help I am a novice to E types. I am building an S1 4.2 and I need an oil filter for it. It has a spin on conversion.
Also where do the two underbody heatshields fit . There will be many more questions I am sure.
Thanks Bryan

Lots of info here on spin on filters. .....could depend on what spin on adaptor you have as its not standard to your car http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php? ... 21cf479974 http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php? ... 9d4aa159cf

The filter canister will have a type number on it somewhere. If you get the name of the manufacturer e.g. Fram or Crosland and the filter number and take it to an accessory shop they will have a cross-referencing catalogue

Bryan

The larger under body heat shield fits above the two central silencers. The smaller one fits alongside the bell housing and under the gearbox. The exhaust system needs to be off the car before you can fit them.

There's also something you must do :
Read, re-read and re-re-re read the service manual and parts catalogue before any job on the car.

Well said Mich, and as Heuer states you must have your own copy of the manual, using the tech section one for ready reference in the garage.

This is the manual, do you have one?

Sorry Mich my s1 is RHD. The clutch housing and the accelerator are cast aluminium and the brake is pressed steel . I bought the brake housing from a well known, supplier it has two holes for the brake cylinder (neither are a good fit with the cylinder) but offering up cylinder when the housing on the bodywork it fouls the frame using either hole. I am not sure I have been sent the correct part. I will investigate further and get someone else to make sure I am not being an idiot . While using the manual it doesn't always explain things very well .I to go onto You Tube to find out how to install the wiper rack .

I have got mount from another supplier and its very different so I will try it tomorrow. One more to ask how do I mount the heat shields under the car. The front one has 3 brackets but the rear has none. Just had a difficult job getting the upper rear fulcrum mounts in. I think a combination of a well painted frame and new bushes .
Put the wiper rack in yesterday and I was glad I watched a tutorial on You Tube still a horrible job. Was going to mount gear box to engine today but found out we have a 3.8 spinner (or driven) plate that will not fit the splines on the box. I don't know if we can get away with just a different plate . The spinner says 3.8 on it but is the pressure plate the same they are both 9 1/2 inch.

Thanks, I did see the holes in the aluminium but not through the asbestos substitute and I thought it may be something like that .All the manuals you can read don't tell you about this sort of thing . Thank goodness for the forum.

My centre heat shield was fitted with screws. I refitted the original, so the holes are in the correct places, although I cannot say if the fixings should originally be pop rivets or screws.

The parts list says pop rivets but no reason why you should not use self tappers if you prefer.

Useful photo for Pheonix to show the location.

New brake master cylinder mount from a different supplier fits . I don't know what Jag the other one is for but its going back . Regarding the clutch, we received the engine with the clutch already mounted. It was only because it had been on the engine for 10 years or more (new) that we decided to make sure it had not seized on . luckily we tried to fit it on the splines and it would have been a disaster if we had just tried to attach to the gearbox.

More questions . I want to fit a capillary oil pressure gauge as well as the warning light switch . Where is the hole in the block for this and will I need a T piece . When we came to mate gearbox to engine we found we had a 3.8 spinner or driven plate (91/2 inch) . Is the 4.2 version of the 3 piece clutch the same apart from the mentioned driven plate. Thanks Bryan.

Your 9.5 inch clutch plate is in fact from a 4.2, and I imagine you will find that the clutch cover is a diaphragm type rather than the old spring type which was fitted to 3.8 cars, with a 10 inch plate. For a mechanical oil gauge, the usual place to fit it is into the oil gallery which runs the whole length of the right hand side of the engine at the level of the oil filter . There are about 4 plugs in this so you are spoilt for choice, and you should not need a T piece

Bryan as i posted above there are different release bearings.....basically different depths from pivot point to contact face......you also said your drive plate would not fit on the gearbox splines.....a photo of what you have may help.....Steve
