#1 "Torpedo" armrests/door pulls????!!!

Post by Bigcatfrankie » Fri Jan 08, 2021 12:25 pm

Still urgently seeking a pair of "torpedo" armrests/door pulls............ie. with 166mm fixing bolt centres..........they appear to be like gold dust!
If anyone has a pair they want to sell, or know of a supplier who stocks them, then please let me know.

Thanks Steve and sorry about that............thought the Post might be more relevant to the 'Series 2' section rather than the 'Wanted' section.
Emailed John Skinner last October but received no reply. Have just emailed him again but will probably phone him next week anyway

Hi Tim....its that posting in the wanted section may get you a better result as some are selective in what sections they look at and we do get "traders" viewing the wanted section...Steve

Hi Tim
Don't know if you are aware but S Type and 420 saloon part numbers are the same as for E Type S1 2+2 torpedo type (BD26078 BD26079). You could try a wanted add in the JEC classifieds as well as here.

Hi Bob,
Yes, I was aware that the armrests to other Jaguar models..........I thought the Mk10 and 420G.....were meant to fit but I have my suspicions that although they look very similar the mounting hole centres may well vary.
This is mainly because I enquired about a pair that were going on eBay, but when I asked about the fixing centres they were way out!

Hi Tim
Are you sure your car originaly had them?
I have just been through this with my series 2 2+2 and found it never had them fitted
Something to do with American safety laws jaguar decided not to fit them on early cars and some late series 1 cars as well
The holes for them are still there however so if you like them you can still fit them

Hi Joe,
No, despite my car being a fairly late Series 2 it wasn't, as far as I am aware, fitted with armrests. It's just that to close the door you have to either pull the door handle or pull on the door handle recess........both not ideal as the handle is not designed for that purpose and secondly, that part of the door panel is particularly flimsy. All it needs is a rather heavy-handed passenger closing the door and the damage is done!

Not all S2 cars were fitted with armrests. The reason the area where you pull the door shut is flimsy is because you are probably missing the long self tapper that goes through the chrome near the door lock, through the card and screws directly into the door shell. They are normally missing but easy to fit. If you slide the lower forward (IIRC) door chrome forward, you should see a hole in the chrome (or an incorrectly fitted screw).

As far as I know the door recess is the correct way to shut the door
As mentioned there is a long screw that goes through one if the door recess screw holes
It has a special spacer to keep it straight it passes through and goes into the door frame
I guess technically the doors should shut with ease as they are so long and heavy
But often due to poor door fitment and in my case the bloody new door seals, they don't and need to be slammed
My drivers door shuts great
Passenger is a pig and u have to slam it to shut it
Dont know why there is a difference as they have both just been fitted with the same new door seals
Also my passenger door now sticks out a bit when it dident before
I will have to do something with that seal on that side thats not allowing it to fully shut
Usual old car issues

Joe....also check the seal on the door cill....if you have the drain hole covers fitted to the bottom of your doors you may need cutouts in the seal.....also haveing the quarter light slightly open makes it easier on some to close the doors....the large amount of air your moveing with the door can make it difficult to close if you have a door slammer....Steve

Thanks for picking up about the screw to retain the door card. I have checked on the exploded diagrams of some suppliers to see where exactly the self-tapping screw should be located and it is in the centre of the handle trim on the corner where it turns downwards at 90 degrees.
SC Parts show this as having a plain washer behind it but Martin Robey shows quite a thick spacer. SNG Barratt refer to this as a distance piece. I'll be guessing the thickness of it as I see that it's no longer available.

Its a spacer about 7/8" long (measure it up in the door) and was only made of plastic tubing. Needs to be thick walled about 1/2" diameter with a hole big enough for the self tapper to go through.
