Air Intake Box Assembly

I am considering re-painting my filter housing shell assembly black, it is currently hammerite silver as purchased from one of the usuals some time ago.

Looking in the knowledge base and Porter's book they appear to have been black originally but there appears to be some variety in the colour of the top plate assembly- some appear silver, some black.

There is a fly in the ointment here because 2 adjacent photos show silver and black housings, which confuses me slightly:-

So, I'm pretty clear that I'm going to re-paint the shell assembly hammerite black but should I leave the top plate assembly silver or paint that black too? My car is 888007. I would like it to look more original in this area, especially as the silver stands out like a sore thumb.

Also, are reproduction labels (Coopers?) available for the these?

I’m pretty sure they are black all over (smooth gloss/satin)
I’m also pretty sure the early (certainly ‘62) Cars DIDNT have the coopers sticker?

According JCNA's Official Judging Guide for the Series 1 E-type:

AIR FILTER CANISTER
- Black on 3.8s & early 4.2s, then changed to hammertone silver finish - engine number change point unknown.
FILTER MOUNT & SIDE BRACKET
- Both black

JCNA does not mention a Coopers label. I'm almost certain the Coopers label was applied during routine maintenance and is not Factory original.
I concur with smooth gloss/satin (not hammertone) black for the 3.8 & early 4.2 cannisters.

What does early 4.2 mean. Is that a series 1 4.2, a series one or series 1 1/2 4.2 or is there some Other approximate date that one can consider early vs late.

Early means those made before the late ones Geoff.

No engine change number known means no date known either.

Clear as mud but nobody will die.

Thanks for the clarification Peter. Now I can just use whatever paint I have on the shelf when the time comes. I was just interested as there are long drawn out discussions about what constitutes an early 3.8 detailing obl vs flat floor vs marston radiator etc. but it seems that while there are lots of references to early vs late 4.2's there never seems to be any discussion about how to decide if your car is early or late. Maybe best to paint half the canister satin black And the other half hammertone silver. It should probably be decided if the dividing line should be horizontal or vertical on the cannister.

Geoff, do you have the E Type original book by Clausager? It can help pinpoint when changes came in. It may not have this particular point but is a good reference book.

Isnt the "late 4.2" marked by the synchomesh on first gear......... ie 1966 and after. so before that e types were 3.8 or 4.2 but with a crunchy gearbox ?

or is that something that only exists for me ?

According to the above referenced book the 4.2 saw the Moss box being pensioned off and the introduction of the all synchro box
I’m sure the knowledge section will have the same info

One thing that does appear to be clear from the above statement, is that all 3.8's had black air intake boxes.
