#1 3sp auto to 4sp auto conversion?

Post by jagwit » Mon Nov 21, 2016 9:05 am

I have converted my one Jensen Interceptor's Chrysler A727 transmission to a GM 4L60e transmission.

The main differences are:
1) The 4L60e now offers a 0.7 overdrive. This brings cruising rpms at 120km/h down from 3100rpm to 2100rpm (with the 3.07 diff), as well as massive improvement in open road fuel consumption.
2) The torque convertor has a lock-up clutch.

This conversion has transformed the car in the very best sense! I would do 10 such transmission conversions before doing another EFI conversion. For the time and money, the transmission conversion is just even more rewarding than the EFI.

The S3 E cruises at 3300rpm at 120km/h and could really do with an overdrive. Does anyone know if a TH700R4 or 4L60 has been fitted to a Series 3 V12 2+2? The BW transmission in the car only has a few mm's to spare in some places.
Best Regards
Philip

I have measured up a 4L60E transmission with a view to replacing my BW 3 speed. There are two main problems. One is that the 4L60 oil pan is not central to the casing and would foul the bodywork and second the transmission tunnel is tapered towards the rear and again would foul the oil pan. Without cutting the body the 4L60 is not a viable alternative.

I would be interested to hear if anyone has managed to fit a modern automatic gearbox to a s3 E type.

No experience, but I do know that Dellow make conversion bell housings for the V12 engine.

They can apparently make you a bell housing to suit a range of automatic transmissions.

I suspected as much, thanks.

But.... It sure would transform the car hugely.
