Fuel pump fuse??
#1 Fuel pump fuse??
Went to start my Series 2 OTS this morning and notice the fuel pump didn't 'tick' after I turned the ignition on. Sure enough it ran for a minute then stopped and refused to start. My old (series 1 workshop manual speaks of a 5A fuse behind the dash panel, but I can't find it. Any suggestions?

Try tapping the pump with a spanner or hammer. The SU pump is notorious for having sticking points if the car is not used for a while.

As far as I can see from the Wiring Diagram, the white wire from the Fuel Pump should connect to the left hand side of fuse 6 - but this a 35 amp fuse.
If it hasn't been used in a while, could it be the points in the pump itself that are causing the issue?

Agreed - the fuel pump sits on fuse 6 and it is indeed a white wire connected to a 35a fuse which also feeds the horns and screen wash from memory...
I often had to smack the pump with a heavy object to get it ticking again so I would say it is almost certainly the pump points

All great help - thanks so much. I'm off to belt the thing with a hammer now - that's my kind of mechanics! One thing; as the fuel pump itself is inside the fuel tank, which bit should I hit - the union on top of the access panel looks pretty solid, but I don't want to damage anything!

Your fuel pump is NOT inside the fuel tank on any 4.2 . It is in the right hand rear wing , on a FHC behind an access panel about 6 inches above the removable floor panel , and on an OTS behind the right hand millboard sidecover above the floor panel

So glad I waited 10mins! Thanks so much for the info - I was reading from a series 1 manual. Found the fuel pump and tapped away but to no avail..fuse 6 seems fien too, so I think it's a new pump...

In which case spring for the electronic SU pump which is better than the contact breaker type for occasional use. Only costs an extra ?14 and well worth it - and yes it still ticks! Part no: AZX1308EN from SNG.

its not that bad to fit - there are 3 nuts that secure it to the internal panel and they are easier to undo if the spare wheel is removed. The wiring and possibly the petrol pipes are kept tidy inside the panel by bendable metal straps.
20 Minutes or so should see you finished.

Angus - My brother (who's better at this stuff than I) is coming over later to check the power to the pump - I can't get at the terminals with my meter to check - so I think we'll need to take the pump out to get at them. I've ordered an new pump anyway which I'm hoping will arrive later today - so either way I hope I'll be sorted by tonight......we'll see

Blimey - what a pain in the arse!!
So, fitted the new fuel pump and... still not working!!
Eventually we find an intermittent fault due to a dodgy wiring up under the drivers side footwell.
Very pleased to have it sorted, and on the plus side I'm now ?75 in credit with SNG - what shall I treat myself to I wonder??
Thanks for all the top advice - in particular whoever it was who sent me a link to the coloured wiring diagram - that was really useful.
