Chaps, I note from my original strip down photos there was a return spring fixed to the KH operating lever and indirectly to the balance link therefore. Photos attached. I cannot see this in the parts catalogue and wonder whether its a post factory mod. I know there should be a conical spring in the pivot fixing but this is not available and was not in my car when I stripped it. I am sure I have seen other cars with a return spring mounted and would appreciate any information on this. I am concerned that there may be some residual pressure left on the master cylinder even after the foot brake has been released without a spring.

Yes this is a common mod; I don't think it was factory. My 3.8 had it. The top end of the spring goes through the holes on the bolt where the split pin would go.

Thank you Andrew. I thought I had seen it in other cars. And does it just hook onto the bottom edge of the bracket as it appears to do on my car? I assume the mod is to ensure the pedal is off the master cylinder rod as I suggested above?

Edit. I see it appears on the red car on factory fit so it seems odd it's not in the parts book....come on all you rivet counters. :twisted:

David, I wonder as it seems this spring is featured on a few cars whether it is the subject of a factory bulletin? you seem to have a lot of bulletins I wonder whether you could check your records please?

I think mine is on one of the bolts and secured it by tightening the nut down on it. That car is at the panel shop at present so I can't check.

Hi

Nothing I can find in the service bulletins (although I do not have them all) or a quick look through the parts manual. The service manual page L29 has an inset picture showing the eccentric nut with spring! 875039 built May 61 has one fited from new!

well this is interesting. I think we have found something not noticed before. I am convinced that the spring is a standard fitment probably from a certain point in production, early on, but there is no reference I can find to it in the parts book. Perhaps someone will be along in a while to clarify.

Only reference to a change to the KH servo I can find is this. Maybe the spring is part of the #C20341 assembly?:

I don't have the Spares Bulletin K42 to research further. My FHC was built 17th March 1962 and does not have the spring. As Ian says, the Service Manual does mention removing the return spring during overhaul of the servo. I can't find an issue date for it but one of the Service Bulletins says:

"E" Type Service Manual
"Frequent references to the above manual have been made in the December 1961 issue of Service Bulletins. This manual is being distributed at the present time and any amendments should therefore be noted"


I wonder whether that was wishful thinking and the Manual was not actually released until Spring/Summer 1962 which would tie in with observations?

Interesting information, thank you David. There will be some reference to it somewhere I feel sure, either way I am putting a spring back in mine for good measure would be nice to know for sure though. Maybe it's just a mistake in the parts book and has been accidental left out?
