Hi All,
The engine block on my V12 seems to get very hot. The temp gauge reads fine and the fans cut in ok but it does seem to retain an awful lot of heat and you'd burn yourself if you touched the metal in the valley.
Is this normal? I'm wondering if the water circulation around the block is blocked somewhere.
I did raise a post about oil coolers as the oil pressure does fall 10lbs or so after the car has abeen used spiritedly.

Yes it does get very hot. You can check whether there is a blockage simply by feeling the two S shaped hoses at the top front of the engine as the car warms up:- when the thermostats open, these should both get hot.
You can check the real oil pressure by fitting a mechanical gauge. 10psi sounds rather low to me.
kind regards
Marek

Hi,
The water is definitely flowing around the engine, I just wondered if certain waterways can get blocked?
The oil pressure after say an hours use drops about 10-20 over it's range compared to it's normal oil pressure of about 70lb when warm/hot. Its almost like the oil can't cope with the engine heat, hence my question.
I'm using Halfords 20-50 but perhaps a more modern semi-synthetic might be better.
Cheers

Not only does it get hot, it stays that way. If you commute and get it fully hot in the morning it can still be slightly over ambient by clocking-off time, depending on weather.

Thank you. Sounds like its just normal then.
I think I'll change the oil for a more modern type to see if it hold its pressure.

I doubt that'll help - I'd use the oil recommended for the engine rather than tinker about. I use the Halfords oil from the green tin and I suspect many others also do. I once saw a massive drum of the stuff at Angus;'s place a couple of years ago.
My original concern was that you oil pressure drops TO 10psi, not that it dropped BY 10psi once hot.
kind regards
Marek

So is the oil pressure drop normal with heat soak?
Yes, I'm using the same oil as Angus, although his view was it gets changed each year so you may as well use cheap and cheerful 20-50 mineral.

Hi Richard.....as Marek mentioned above it would be ideal to check your pressure with a mechanical gauge....the electical ones are notorious for inacurate readings at least then you know what pressure you have....if you cant get one then try a local garage
