It's because it's not my field that I ask those whose it is, and the car will be in the UK not in France.

Halifax because foremost Jag-trimmers BAS in Wales don't have anyone local to them.

I'd like to find someone who can comment on post-trimming dimensional changes.

Pilkingtons Classic can make anything you like in terms of glass, and probably do it whilst you wait if you have the pattern.

I think you need to understand what the problem is Rory otherwise it will be a 'game of consequences'. Getting glass to fit the hood will mean it does not lower completely into the door frame and if you like putting your elbow on the door whilst driving it is going to be very uncomfortable! Thanks for that input David.

The assembled curves of the various metal components look exactly right, and as close as dammit to the Factory-Fit picture you suggest, certainly to the naked eye.

If I didn't think the glasses were original I would just think they were copies that were wrong.

I take your point about the height of the glass but in fact I'll be adding a maximum of 11mm (17mm-6mm see pictures) and the glass is currently 12mm below the lip of the rubber wiper.

At worst the rubber wiper will be slightly in contact with the glass, and its presence should be more or less imperceptible to the elbow.

I agree that chasing consequences is a horrible approach, but the hood metalwork seems so perfect that I'm inclined to think it's my only option.

I see that Pilkingtons suggest the laminated approach is the future, do you have a contact that I could bounce the ideas off ? With the panel being so "unsupported" I'd like their advice, and also to hear about thickness options as my current glass is 4.9mm thick and presumably it would make re-using the claws and grips easier if I re-used that same thickness.

Could anyone with experience doing it on an E-Type comment on what changing-over those parts onto the new glass entails ?

The new glass should be a tight push fit into the carrier. Some people use Dum-Dum to keep it in place but I think using strips of rubber from a bicycle inner tube is a better option. Grippy but easy to remove without mess.

Whenever I need things like door windows for my coaches I just get them made at the local domestic glaziers. They can bevel the edges, get them toughened if need be (I use laminated in the doors) and etch the BS number in, most of which they can do while you wait. About fifteen quid a time. Flat glass should not really be a specialised job at all.
If the glass ends up too high what is to stop you just making it drop further into the door?
Incidentally the right hand windscreen pillar on my convertible seems to have been bashed forward at some point, probably when the car was built. The metalwork behind the right corner of the dash is visibly deformed, but I'm not going to touch it since the windscreen pillars line up perfectly with each other. Reminds me of the Hindustan assembly line where they just bash everything till it fits!

At BAS Jack's suggestion I've run two ratchet straps, one left, one right, fastened just above the toggles on the pan and pulling parallel back to the tack-strip, to simulate the tension in the fitted hood.

The shape changes hardly at all, but is tending to diminish the gap by a couple of mm.

I think I'll leave everything until the hood is finished, the car has done Montpellier to Cape Wrath and back, everything has jiggled into its final resting place - and then make suitable templates, and look for the right supplier.

Is the brass sliding heel held on in the same way, David, ie an interference fit over a crushable medium like inner tube ?

Yes, although it depends on tolerances. The glass is 3/16" IIRC so measure the block gap and play it by ear - if the shoe will accept glass and rubber then use it. The trick is to get someone to stretch out the rubber inner tube to make it thinner, push the glass against the rubber and push both into the receiver. If the glass is loose then repeat with less stretch. The rubber will contract further clamping the glass in place. A lubricant helps if you are having trouble, just make sure whatever you use is rubber friendly - soapy water, talc, spray window cleaner - avoid petroleum based products. Ideally you want something that will evaporate when you have finished otherwise the glass will slide out! If you can do the job without lube then that is the best option. Don't forget to trim off excess rubber with a sharp knife when you have finished.

I know you will, but don't forget to post some photos and experience of how it all goes. We don't have a guide on this.

Still puzzled as to why your hood sticks are different. :shrug:

Window glass still needs changing to get a better seal along the top edge.

Anyone who is considering having a trim done, or a hood fitted, should make the effort to go and see BAS in Wales ; they actually MANUFACTURE the stuff, in-house, that almost every other fitter SELLS and USES, as well as being sufficiently hands-on to have the actual sewing machines from the Jaguar factory.

I was blown away by my guided tour, and the help I have had, at a distance, for the trimming I did myself, has been absolutely outstanding.

So, new hood from BAS as part of a 5.500 km proving trip from the Mediterranean to Cape Wrath and back.

Seen here at Kylesku looking down Loch Glencoul, blowing a hoolie, with enough rain the next day to test the front hood seal, hood-to-screen as it were.

No leaks whatsoever, perfect alignment of the hood chrome strip with the screen top trim, and the hood is a hundred times easier to fit now that the locating pins and toggles all fall into place without any forcing.

I think getting the wooden spar right, and the metalwork right, as two entirely separate operations, before linking them together, was the key to ending up with all the boxes ticked.

Still some drips getting past the glass/door/hood/B-post intersection by the occupants' shoulders tho', suspect this may remain impossible to resolve.

Had an interesting trawl through some cars on the hummock at Silverstone last week, here are twelve examples of what the wrong overlap looks like, with abject apologies to any owners concerned.

My car has lots of faults, but just not this one.

It's hard to get right ; there were only twelve cars up there ...............

Didn't think mine was too bad although the picture reveals a fault but as it doesn't leak i will leave well alone! I just wish I could stop the leaks from the doors onto the cills. Does anyone have any tips on this as I am running out of ideas?
