Smiths clock replacement
#1 Smiths clock replacement
Hi there
Is there any supplier for a replacement Smiths clock the same as the original? Mine looks like it has already been modified and is broken so is suspect it may mot be possible to fix again.

If the face of the clock is ok, why not send it to Mike Eck in the USA, very good service, fits a modern quartz movement but clock looks like the original:

Thanks, I already have been in touch with him and we are still talking but he is not sure he can fix it seeing as it has probably already been modified at some point in the past.

Unfortunately Mike (great communication by the way, would have loved to give him some business) has confirmed that he can't help me.
Still need to find a replacement

Caerbont Automotive Instruments in Swansea who are the successors to Smiths told me that they now re-manufacture a replacement for the Series 2 clock. Their web site is a bit impenetrable but the URL is:

They do make one
CTE3107-01 clock - £132.80 including shipping to Australia.
Clock case is 60mm diameter, dial is white print on black background. bezel is 1/2'V' black.
Manufacturing lead-time is up to 4 weeks from order.
It looks like it will match the other dials in most respects, but it is not an exact copy in they it doesn't have the adjustment knob or screw.
I am going to keep looking for an original one for a bit but this is a backup option.

They do come up from time to time on eBay, if you aren't in a hurry. I was looking for a replacement Kienzle clock for my Series 3, which I eventually found. Which, by the way I do believe that the Later Series 2 cars were also fitted with the Kienzle (dependant what was left in the parts bin as the cars were coming down the production line).
You can probably get a new Kienzle from Welsh here;
http://www.welshent.com/product_info.ph ... 83_299_303
OR
They also have the Smiths here;
http://www.welshent.com/advanced_search ... ck&x=0&y=0
Alternatively, you can try Howard instruments located in Heidelberg, here in Vic, for repairs but I don't think you'll escape for anything under $300, if indeed it can be repaired.

Thanks John. That second one is the one from my previous post, but they didn't have a photo, so nice to see it in the flesh.

Andrew
You could try John Ostick http://www.jdo1.com. He did a fine job of converting my S2 clock to quartz leaving the adjustments in place.
They are on holiday until 21st August though.

Hello,
four years ago I did a DIY-conversion of the broken Smiths clock of my S2 to a quartz movement. I bought a donor quartz clock, namely from an old Ford Escort (Ford part no. 95AB-15000-BB), which is numerously offered for a few Euros e.g. on ebay. The wiring of the clock can easily be seen after dismantling. I soldered the step motor, the IC, the quartz, one resistor and two capacitors out of this clock. Then I took a perfboard, cutted it to fit into the housing of the Smiths clock and to be mounted to the original mounting points. I rearranged the parts from the donor clock on that board and rewired them. To adjust the clock two added micro push buttons on the perfboard are operated by the adjustment knob and the screw of the Smiths clock. They have to be pushed now instead of turned. Finally I mounted the original hands to the step motor. The whole efforts were some pleasurable hours on a rainy Saturday and total costs of about 20 Euro. The modifications are not visible and could be completely undone.

Nice one Joerg.
That is true ingenuity.
It's things like this that make restoration jobs so pleasurable.
