#1 Door Drains

Post by ALAN COCHRANE » Tue May 07, 2013 2:28 pm

Hi Everyone

I'm giving my S1 Roadster a complete interior refurb including the door panels.
I came across an old thread from 2008 on this forum concerning door drain ducts. This included handy photos of the underside of one door and the fitment of two pop riveted "ducts" to divert rainwater away from the sills. My doors seem to be missing these ducts.
The thread also mentioned the old Jaguar part nos BD 20978 & 20979 for these items. I phoned SNG and they had nothing listed under these numbers. Can anyone help solve this mystery.
Cheers

Alan

Try Hutson's!

They also supply the door drain outlets (but no part numbers - just ask)

David

Thanks for the info. I contacted Hutson's and they have ordered a set for me. I was very impressed with the service and would certainly use them again.

Cheers

I mentioned to Julian Barratt that the normal Forum response to requests for unusual parts was "Try Hutsons!". He said Hustons secret weapon was Andy Rayner and that was difficult to replicate.

Just remembered - Angus took this photo whilst we were down at E-Type UK. It shows the water deflectors (black) and the door drain outlets (body colour) which are often missing on restored cars. Angus was most intrigued by the 'patch' fitted over the window winder spring which he had never seen before.

Image

Part numbers are:
BD20978 Sealing plate front x2
BD20979 Sealing plate rear x2
BD 1814/2 Pop rivet securing sealing plates to doors x14

Door drain outlets have no part numbers, but Hutsons can supply if you describe them.

Some cars did have these covers to the winder mechanism - I thought they were for the later cars but cannot be specific . I have one of these covers somewhere or other !

That photo also clarifies the debate we had earlier on here about the water reflectors (the black panels).

#8 Door water deflectors

Post by david muir » Mon May 13, 2013 9:05 am

Hi,
My car does not have these water deflectors. Have done a part number search on the 'main' suppliers' websites and cannot find them-anyone know where I can get them?

Thanks

Actually it is probably better to use the self adhesive membrane found on modern cars because if you need access to the inner door it is a real pain to drill out those rivets and even more of a pain to get the bits out of the door bottoms to stop them rattling around.

Just wanted to clarify on this subject of door drain outlets. If you fit them, do you still need to cut the cill rubber seal adjacent to door drain in the door?

Secondly, if you just cut the rubber, can you get away from not fitting the outlets?

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick....i have the drain outlets fitted and no cuts in the rubber seals......ideally you need the outlets fitted. cant see that just cutting the seal wont stop water running in.. Steve

The drains must be fitted - the rubber is cut around them so as not to block the water.

Are we talking about the same thing......im refering to the small covers fitted at the bottom of the doors....when the doors are closed the rubber seal on the body cill presses up against them.....the outlet at the bottom diverts water below the rubber seal....Steve

Image
You can see the indent in the rubber....NB this is a S2 2+2

Yes. Jaguar specified cut outs in the rubber after complaints the doors needed to be slammed to shut properly. This allowed the drains to move against the seals without distorting the rubber as you can see in the SPC diagram:

Hi David....thats interesting.....never sure about that bottom rubber seal....when i first got my car the rubber was upside down and stuck out under the bottom of the door....so turned it around and as you see in my photo above it sticks up.......where as in your drawing it points out.....when i re trimmed last year i tried again and this was the only position i came up with that worked......will try to check part number for the seal....is it different for the 2+2s Steve
Edit.....this is the S1 section but Nicks car and mine are both S2 2+2....looks like a different seal section is used....for the S1 S2 S3 2+2 and S3 roadster BD28447 from what i can find this seal is fitted pointing up as in my photo above........but S1 S2 use BD24789 and is fitted pointing out as in Davids photo above.....dont trust me on this im not an expert..... Thanks Steve. Did you buy them or make them yourself?

They look simple enough to make out of a sheet of stainless steel or aluminium.

Remember the hose draining the front top of the door, from the hole at the right.

One of my hoses has come off, I hope to get at it in the winter I will try taking the window frame out ?

Tony

No need to take the door glass out to refit the hose. Just engage one of your local street urchins or failing that your delicately handed wife to do the job. My better half wondered what all the fuss about lack of space was all about when she kindly reattached the drivers door hose after I had inadvertently detached it.
