#1 Electronic ignition kit off ebay

Post by jamie101 » Wed Dec 27, 2017 7:18 pm

Hi everyone.
Just wondered if anyone has used one of these kits off ebay and if theyre any good, they seem quite cheep at just shy of £100?
Heres the link for them -
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jaguar-E-typ ... ect=mobile
Just that on our 4.2 FHC she seem to have developed a slight misfire and we have replaced the obvious plugs leads points etc but nothing so wondered if the dizzy was worn internaly as ive had this with them on old fords before.
Thanks. J

I have one of these distributors, I ran it for a while without any issues until I changed to a 123, I carry the Powerspark as a spare. I swapped the Powerspark out as I wasn't happy with the quality of the unit, it didn't let me down though.

Thank you for the reply.
Could i ask how much was the other kit you baught please? I just really wanted to try it just to rule out the dizzy to try and solve our misfire problem.
She also struggles to start aswell somtimes, maybe down to spark issues again?

For less than £40 you can get a module that will replace the points in your dizzy from the same people...and they supply a new red rotor arm too...avoid the black ones with a rivet like the plague....the module just drops in and you can pop the points back in in 10mins if it dies. I have one in mine...not missed a beat in five years....fingers crossed of course....

Thanks for the reply on that but im thinking my actual internals on the dizzy may be worn thats why i thaught a complete new dizzy plus the electric ignition may kill two birds with one stone.

Be aware that the advance curve on these distributors may be nothing like correct. The one I bought topped out at 42 degrees advance...

I purchased a cheapo distributor from ebay. (Not this seller). Absolutely useless. Simply couldn’t get the car to run right.
As a last resort cleaned up my old unit and fired straight away.
I posted a thread on here about it, I don’t think I’m the first to have a bad experience of these.

Hi Jamie.......if you have the time then send your distributor to http://www.distributordoctor.com well known on the forum.....he supplies the red rotor arms (beware if repro red ones) and great quality dizzy caps and pertronix and other electronic ignitions....he does have a long waiting list.....Steve

Thank you again for the reply.
I may give him a call see how long the waiting list is as we really wanted to get the car out this summer but i have a bit of a job list to get done on it first,
The slight misfire is the one thats confusing me a little at the moment weather it could be a ignition or carb problem? Im thinking more ignition at the moment as the engine will tick over but seams tonmiss a beat ever so often but will rev up instantly when the trottle is dipped, its very responsive, but on holding revs on you can feel the odd misfire through the engine now and again.

Hi Jamie.......you can always run a wire (fused) direct from the battery to the coil just to bypass ignition switch/tacho/old wireing etc......this will eliminate quite a bit of the low tension wireing.. Steve

Another thing to check is the plug caps. If these are repro champion resistor caps then check the resistance is what it should be. Somewhere between 5000 and 10,000 ohms is fine. Many hundreds of thousands of ohms or open circuit not fine. I have had two fail. The engine idled ok but missed irregularly on load.

Original caps used a carbon slug as the resistance..crude but robust. The repro ones use a metal-oxide resistor and they just ain't as robust.

This is a very rubbish picture of mine still fitted to the car. Any ideas what model it maybe? Or where the part number is exactally located?
Thanks again everyone.
