#1 S3 Air filter boxes

Post by vipergts » Tue May 18, 2010 9:42 pm

Can anyone confirm whether these were silver hammerite throughout production?

Someone said to me that the latter cars were simply silver paint........quite honestly I think they're on drugs :?

They were all repainted with hammerite , my commemorative has still the original hammer finish from the factory.

Is the paint a standard silver or silver grey Hammerite, and if so can you buy it off the shelf. Also are the heater fan box and associated parts a standard gloss black

Did my Series 3 OTS Air Boxes in standard Hammerite Silver (Hammered Finish) and the heater box with Hammerite Black (Smooth). It looks right.

Just restarting this thread....

Am giving the air filters a going over at the moment and about to soda blast the box and trumpets, I will be using Hammerite silver for the air filter box, hammered finish of course.

But what do people do with the inside, leave it bare? Also for the trumpets

I feel this is a stupid question but to paraphrase, the only stupid question is the one never asked :?

When the SWB air filter can was silver it was Hammerite finish AFAIK. But the Series 3 filter boxes were smooth silver not Hammered finish I think. Of course, there's always Hammerite Smooth....

Paint inside and out of course, but not the breather castings under the fixing bolts - they are natural Mazac or aluminum, I forget which.

Picking up on this old post.
I want to refurb my S3 air filter boxes & wondered if anyone can confirm the exact paint colour.
I would tend to agree with the previous msg about the finish being smooth, just want to know if I can obtain the right paint & colour.

On one of these pictures you can see that the original paint is plain silver. Since I don;t have a picture to support it, I'm not sure if the airfilter boxes were white inside, buy that's what I painted them. Silver from the local hardware store, original decals and the look OK to me. Probably wouldn't pass a concours, but that's not what I'm going for.
(Are the pictures showing or is it some announcement from Photobucket ?)

My air boxes were original, very tatty and required restoration, including new metal. They had never been repainted unless someone had utterly stripped them inside and out, painted them and replaced the stickers. The PO had owned the car since it was ten years old, it was unrestored then and although he had started restoration, air boxes were untouched. They had very thin paint coverage inside, not a lot more outside and were smooth silver throughout. Hammerite smooth silver was a pretty good match and still looks good today.

Incidentally, my car was very early, built in January 1971.

Veering slightly off topic, with information from XKE data. Series 3 LHD cars started production in August 1970, Series 3 RHD cars started production in January 1971

I know at least one RHD FHC built in December 1970; I have one photo of the engine bay, including the air boxes, again, unrestored. They are smooth silver in appearance. It was a UK delivered car, now down under.

Just had a look in Richard T Russ’ superb book on V12 E-type originality. He states the boxes were “Silver hammered finish” but in the accompanying photo, I would describe it as much more smooth. It certainly is not the finish you get from full on Hammerite. I am no originality slave, but smooth silver Hammerite, which is not actually quite “smooth”, looks very close.

My car was released in Aug 71 and still has original paint on the air boxes - is a smooth hammerite style silver paint.
