#1 REAR HATCH RUST.

Post by TiltyV12 » Sun Mar 11, 2018 8:35 am

Hi All ,

Whilst preparing my recently acquired 1971 V12 LHD IMPORT I have discovered some rust on the body.
The problem area is inside the rear tailgate hatch underneath the rubber seal on the main car body
at the bottom of the hatch on the lip.

The drain hole is clear at bottom of the hatch and the rest of car shows no sign of any other rust.
Has anyone else had this and how did they effect a repair ?

NB.When the seal is replaced you cannot see the problem area.

Many Thanks Brian Tilt. :wavegreatbritain: :wavegreatbritain:

Brian : is the rust structural or merely cosmetic ? If cosmetic, rub down, use phosphoric acid to kill the rust, then wash down and prime and paint. If, however, the metal is perforated, this is a complex area to repair for reasons I show in this photo, and I would advise taking professional advice on it

Hi Christopher ,

Thanks for your prompt reply ! The rust is only cosmetic and only discovered whilst car was being given a
final detailing before getting ready for the UK roads. Everything structural looks fine on the car.

Many Thanks Brian. :wavegreatbritain: :wavegreatbritain:

Mine was totally rotten in this area so it was all cut away and replaced. But I did wonder if the seal had been blocking the drain hole by sitting right on top of it. I decided I will check carefully that there is a clear exit route for the water once I get the seal glued in place...

Hi Jeremy ,
Thank You for your reply to me.Have you got any more information on how you did the repair or better still
photos ? Did you do the work your self or use a professional body shop ? Did you have to purchase any parts ?

I am hoping to get mine sorted over the next month ready for Easter.

Many Thanks Brian Tilt :wavegreatbritain: :wavegreatbritain:
