#1 Mounting bracket Differential E Type - XJ6

Post by JD-JAG66 » Wed Mar 14, 2018 12:08 am

I had to take out the IRS again after installation, when I noticed that the diff was leaking.
I decided that it could be a good idea to install the XJ6 S3 differential instead of having the 2.88 diff of my automatic American Import overhauled.
Which obliged me to buy new brake calipers, but I can now sell the S1 E type calipers and the 2.88 diff...anyway.
Question.
The diff mounting bracket of the E type and XJ6 are different in that the XJ6 diff with its diff mountings sits higher.
Is it better to use the E type diff mounting brackets or keep the XJ6 mounting brackets?
I guess that the U joint on the propshaft should cope with the minimal height difference, but I would prefer to hear an opinion from somebody that has done this before.
Finding out that I would have to take that IRS out again, on my own, is a situation that I would like to avoid...
Cheers

You need to use E type brackets otherwise your diff pinion angle will be wrong and your prop will vibrate and wear out.

I am not even sure your could clear the cage if you used XJ6 fulcrum brackets. You cant with XJS onesl, I tried once.

What ratio is the XJ6 diff?

Thanks!!

According to the Jaguar Maintenance Handbook that came with the XJ6 that I got the diff out from, the diff for automatic 4.2 has a 3.058:1 ratio.

Apparently the Power Lock was optional. Any idea how I can find out whether it has (or not) Power Lock?

Hi Jan.....worth checking your XJ6 diff ratio prior to fitting i thought xj6 auto was higher than that....usually they have a small metat tag bolted to the rear cover at the bottom....often covered in muck and paint....ratio stamped on it......or turn input shaft and check how much output shaft moves......to check power lock......turn one output shaft..if the other turns the same way with it its power lock.....if it turns opposite its not.... It is possible that both output shafts will turn in the same direction on a non LSD unit if there's a bit of drag in the diff. To be absolutely sure just slightly load up both output shafts by hand while you turn them.

Thanks again to both of you.
Could confirm that my diff is indeed a non power lock. And a 3.058 by turning the output shafts and counting the turns of the propshaft end of the diff.
Indeed with just hand pressure I could make the output shafts turn as you suggested.

Thanks
