#1 How to post a short video of a rattle?

Post by Vonkie » Wed Dec 04, 2019 2:59 pm

In August, I posted the following in the "Running Reports" forum:

"Another recent phenomenon that is starting to manifest more frequently, if still intermittently: there is what can only be described as a sound as if of a metal spring creaking, manifesting itself with the throttle at times, mainly not at speed and mainly uphill. Every now and then, what is either the exact same noise, or coincidentally something that sounds like it while being something entirely different, would manifest itself on going very slowly, or pulling away, without involving the throttle at all. Someone suggested my description of the former "sounded like the cam chain". Theories welcome. I suppose the only thing for it is to get my chappie to be in the car with me and to hear it when it manifests itself - it was too rare the last time they looked, and they did not know what I was talking about."

After much head-scratching and various interventions, the noise is back. I have a short video taken on my phone on which one can hear it pretty well (especially with good headphones). I don't know how best to post a video on this forum. Simply trying it as an attachment (like for a photo) does not work. I am very curious about this rattle/creak and would love to have the clever boffins on this forum listen to it to help me (and my chappie) out if possible.

Hi Frank,
I posted a video via YouTube.
If you save the video to ‘My Videos’ in YouTube, copy the link to it via the ‘share’ option, you can then paste the link into your forum post.

Ok, here goes: (Many thanks Richard for the You Tube advice):

[Apparently, the video could be viewed only by me - I have tried to make it public in the post below]

Just after I say "dry rattle", if you have sound turned up full, or nice earphones, you can hear the dry rattle quite well for a bit. Like a creaking sound.

Any ideas very heartily appreciated.

Frank

Hi
I can’t view the video. It may be set to ‘private’ in YouTube.
Yu can change this via the ‘edit’ option and choose ‘public’.

Hi Steve

There are two phenomena. I think they are related. But they are different.

The first is a metal creak, like a metal bedspring creaking, occurring every now and then on a slow turn or on slow pullaway. To the uninitiated (me) that sounds like body, not engine.

The second is this weird rattle (on the video), which sounds like the creak sped up, or like an old dotmatrix printer, which occurs intermittently, sometimes not at all for quite a while, at a certain throttle opening, mainly when going uphill. Given how it manifests, this feels like engine, not body. At times, on high revs, one needs to listen carefully to hear it. At other times, it is very clear, like in the video, and manifests mainly towards the top of the throttle uphill. Opening or closing the throttle with foot pedal tends to make it come and go then - so it occurs at a certain throttle opening.

I have not managed to re-create the rattle/creak on idle, or on revving while standing still, but I can try again, now that the rattle seems more pronounced when it manifests.

The last time I tried to demonstrate it to the mechanic, we drove around like idiots for 50 miles without any manifestation.

Hi Frank....check the engine/gearbox mounts if there is too much movement in them it could cause things to rattle like exhaust on bodywork or carbs touching frames etc...Steve

Yes I think mountings need attention, as it rings a bell that mounting was sagging a bit on one side.

That may well be it.

Let’s see! Any further ideas welcome and appreciated. Won’t be able to have her attended to until the New Year.

Will report back.
