#1 what to do

Post by gerry59 » Mon Jun 29, 2020 4:48 pm

Hi Guys/Girls

I have a 1970 Ser11 2+2 fixed head coup auto, I am just starting a full restoration and wondering
if I should change to a manual, and also is it appropriate to change the colour.

Would appreciate you feed back if it was your car what would you do?

Cheers

Gerry.

P.S. its red

Tricky.

The car will drive a lot better as a manual. The original auto will be dim witted compared to a modern auto, whereas the all synchro manual stands up well. Being a 2+2, you could convert to a manual overdrive.

However, to convert, there’s lots of extra parts to source. Whereas restoring what you already have is more straightforward, and probably cheaper, assuming the auto box is serviceable.

As for the colour, if you’ve got to paint the car anyway, you might as well have a colour you like. The quality of the repaint is probably more important than the colour.

E-type values don’t seem to be too sensitive to originality, within certain parameters. Colour, RHD conversions, and gearbox swaps don’t make too much difference, unless you’re talking about a very original 3.8.

But do try to keep to a period Jaguar colour. Lots of choice and you can find examples of cars and paint codes in the Forum Knowledge Base.
