Thanks for the replies, found the problem. After lots of head scratching, discovered that the earth wire that connects to the otter switch was actually connected to the output wiring to the fans. Dont have a clue why the bonnet would have a effect on this. Thanks for all your help.

Hello, Yes I mean the bonnet catch which is earthed.
