Most of an LT77 is metric, but the primary pinion nose is 1/2", and in Rovers runs in a sintered bronze bush in the crank. If you can solve the bellhousing issue (one that will mate an Lt77 to an XK engine) best option would be a R380 box out od a TVR etc - same layout as LT77, but stronger (theory ...

Re cleaning threads with a die nut - I was in the habit of doing this until I was advised die nuts are a bit too aggressive, and proper chaser items should be used. Lang do an excellent set of imperial tap and die chasers in UNF and UNC.

I worked in a brake workshop in another life, and when we found signs of inner race rotation was advised to apply a couple of dimples to the area with a centre punch, just enough to require tapping the inner race home on the axle. Have some experience of LT77 in Rovers- 2 SD1, 2 P6B converted, Discovery etc so... The LandRover versions have longer input and output shafts so dont go there. In the SD1s I never got vigorous with the box, only trouble I had was clutch hydraulics. The later boxes known as R380 are repudetly strong...
