Automatic gearbox issues

My 1970 2+2 has two automatic gearbox issues.
First, when moving from park to drive it doesn't do so smoothly, it jolts and the car wants to leap forward.
Second, I'm sure I'm not getting third gear.
Any thoughts as to the possible causes and remedies?
Thanks kev

In which case it is as you say just a simple matter of undoing the nuts
Five nuts / studs undone. One stud broken off. Two nuts/ studs being very reluctant to move. A simple matter proving to be very difficult. :questionmarks:

Re: Exhaust manifold removal

Is this a car with twin strombergs and the crossover pipe from inlet manifold? Is it the front manifold that’s defective or the rear? Mine is a 1970 reimported from across the pond and converted to triple SUs. The crack is on the front manifold. I see no cross over pipe, just 4 inaccessible / awkwa...

Exhaust manifold removal

I need to replace a cracked exhaust manifold. Can I remove it with the engine in situ and without removing the cylinder head?

Re: Chassis and engine numbers don't match

I did buy the car, but didn't return to the forum to update so sorry about that chaps. We've just returned from a 1250 mile tour of Scotland and on a final day of our tour we called in to Livingstone to show the car to the, now elderly, gentleman who imported the car from a Californian policeman, st...

Don’t just walk away - Run !!
Tim's absolutely right. Avoid it like the plague?

Is your red or blue?
But why avoid? What difference does it make?

Neither is mine. The red one is the car up for auction.

Re: Chassis and engine numbers don't match

Tim,
but what, if any, difference does it make?
I can understand if it's a rare car, something special, but this is a run of the mill american import that's been changed by various owners over the years. It's not original and it's not concours. It's just a useable e-type.

Re: Chassis and engine numbers don't match

Phil, do you mean just go for the car if you think it's worth it, or walk away, it's going to be a painful journey?

Re: Chassis and engine numbers don't match

Spoke with the auction house this morning about 9am so before i saw the most recent posts. The engine number on the block matches the V5. He couldn't find the chassis number and the current vender and auction house suspect an earlier restoration removed the number and failed to replace it. But stran...

Re: Distance between the seat and steering wheel

Seats look correct, but have been retrimmed. Bought for 5000 us dollars in 2002, converted to rhd, some engine work and fettling then sold valued for insurance at £22,000 in 2004. It's not clear who did that work so can't answer the question was it done right. I didn't look for the adjustable bolts....

Distance between the seat and steering wheel

I'm 5 '6" and just looked at a series 2 2+2. When the seat is pulled forward enough for me to operate the pedals, the gap between the steering wheel and seat is just 2 1/2 inches, just enough to get my legs under but not comfortable.
I assume something is wrong with the car rather than being typical?

Chassis and engine numbers don't match

I looked at a car today and the numbers on the v5 didn't match the numbers on the silver plate by the battery. Should they?
What should i do now i know they don't match?
Thanks in advance

Re: Auto vs manual

What is your budget for a good car? I have £35,000, but would like to spend less. I'm after something we will use to tour the UK. Not interested in concours or it being "right", just something we can use 10 months of the year, rain or shine, avoiding the salt. This is my TR being properly used http...

A very personal thing.
Have you viewed many E Types for sale to see what you would like? Viewed as in person not just internet photos.

Geoff
Geoff, I like the 2+2 so not an issue for me.

No, not been to see one before with an intention of buying. Travelling tomorrow to view.

Re: Auto vs manual

what do you want..an auto or manual....Steve Steve, I'd prefer a manual but might not be able to find a good one for my budget. I understand it is best to buy a rust free car rather than the "right" spec but with bodywork issues. My concern with an auto is how much i'd be missing out on the driving...

Auto vs manual

I suspect most cars were autos, but what's the view here in the UK of an auto etype given our preference for manual cars? Is an auto etype as enjoyable to drive as a manual?
Thanks in advance
