Re: S1 FHC Quarterlight

Butt - practice on some other brass offcuts. The repair should be invisible when done. Be careful not to overheat the work or the thinner metal will melt real quick. You will find the 55% silver will flow into all nooks and crannies . Its very satisfying when you acquire the knack.

Re: S1 FHC Quarterlight

Hello Phil - number 2 nozzle , clean up metal and remove chrome (obviously) . I would use a piece of 2mm brass so I could direct the flame at a heavier material and spread the heat - if you know what I mean. Mix the flux with a tiny amount of water and apply to all surfaces. When finished sand down ...

Sounds like a possible electrical fault maybe - ballast resistor circuit ? - if you have one that is.

Re: RECOMMENDED THERM0STAT IN UK CLIMATE

Circulation at 65 degrees via the bypass you are indicating Merak - yes.
You are right about not using it in winter - I don't anyway - purely a summer car.

Re: RECOMMENDED THERM0STAT IN UK CLIMATE

Sorry Chris I am not convinced - not until I can read a subjective test done on the Jaguar 6 - or Jaguars original data is uncovered and can be published - I will still be cautious with thermostat selection regarding these motors and in fact careful with all aspects of their cooling system. Leading ...

Re: RECOMMENDED THERM0STAT IN UK CLIMATE

Hello Christopher I am not arguing the point just showing by that article that those ideas may now be out of date (since last week) If I am 'guilty' of anything it is to fall in line with the current thinking that was - got it?
Now how did the blocks crack then ?

Re: RECOMMENDED THERM0STAT IN UK CLIMATE

Hello Merak firstly you have expended lots of time and effort to collect your data - so credit where credit's due is what I will say. I was aware of the Coolcat website but it is several years since I last looked at it - and found much more info has appeared. I thought the various thermostats and th...

Re: RECOMMENDED THERM0STAT IN UK CLIMATE

Hmmm, quite a lot of information from Mr Marek who of course is totally above being accused of opinion-ism. Yet an opinion is what he has nonetheless. The data he supplies us with does not seem to be his (or he would have claimed it) and is for another engine from the Jaguar range and not the XK uni...

As regards brake cylinders I suppose 'Primary' and ' Secondary ' may suffice.

Re: RECOMMENDED THERM0STAT IN UK CLIMATE

There are some misconceptions floating about here. The sole function of a thermostat is to set the minimum operating temperature of the engine. Just go with the manufacturer's recommendation and don't read any more into it than that. The cold coolant shock as the thermostat opens ( and as I said th...

Re: RECOMMENDED THERM0STAT IN UK CLIMATE

I agree the engine will warm up at the same rate Marek and the engine won't remain at 84-88 degrees - the upper limit is just controlled by the cooling capacity of the system and the ambient air plus the work the engine is doing- but the object of the higher rate thermostat is to allow the engine to...

Re: RECOMMENDED THERM0STAT IN UK CLIMATE

Once the thermostat has opened it doesn't matter what the rating is and the car will not run cooler because of it. The higher temperature opening thermostat just allows the engine to warm up faster - with the circulation closed off the head temperature will rise rapidly .On the E-type you can see th...

Re: Help in finding E-Type having body# R 1623

My '61 FHC was one of these - it had V1362 on the data plate but the body was V1374 and had never been any other colour than Gunmetal grey. 30 years ago Jag people told me it was due to damage on the line - they pulled the next gunmetal car in the queue forward while the original went back to the pa...

Re: Problem for your deliberation

I had exactly the same on my 3.8 FHC - that was the rotor arm too - in my case the engine ran just fine at all speeds but if you stopped it it would not restart until it had cooled.
