Re: Engine oil capacity query
Thank you for all the replies and suggestions - I haven't had the chance to get back on the case with this until now. Does anyone out there know if the dipstick for a 3.8 is exactly the same as a 4.2? mtnjag - interested to hear that you have the same situation with your '62 FHC. You mention other t...

Re: Engine oil capacity query
Thanks Steve - I had a read through the posts in the link you referred me to. As a consequence I checked the dimensions and condition of my oil sump dipstick and it certainly seems to spot on in terms of marking - it has the 'E' - the length from collar to end/hatch top/hatch bottom etc is correct a...

Re: Engine oil capacity query
Thank you Malcolm - I checked the dipstick and it does have an 'E' marked at the bottom end. It is straight from the collar down and though I can feel it very lightly touch something as it enters the sump (baffles?), it fully locates without any need for forceful pressure. I may drain down again and...

Engine oil capacity query
The Haynes manual states the engine oil capacity of my Dec '61 S1 FHC 3.8 (engine no R2836-9) as 15 imperial pints. I've just changed the oil and filter and the dipstick level after adding 15 pints and running the engine is at the bottom of the hatched marking. The engine has long been fitted with a...

Wire wheel balancing near Fleet in Hants?
Can anyone recommend a company that can properly balance wire wheels based in the North Hants, West Surrey, Berks area?

Angus - sorry to have not come back re spinners until now - been away etc - and wanted to try and establish whether the spinners are original or repro. It would appear that the spinners are definitely not recent repros but given that the car was restored in the late eighties/early nineties they may ...

Thank you for the responses thus far - much appreciated.
Fair point that Christopher makes regarding shims - I should have said replacement shim perhaps. The splines on the hub do look a little pointed but when I lock the back axle in gear and try and rotate the wheel I can't feel any movement between the wheel and hub. Mich - I believe I can provoke the ...

'Cracking' sound at rear - hub splines, wires?
I'm occasionally getting a noise emanating, I believe, from the right rear side of the car which sounds a bit like a 'cracking' sort of noise. I've recently greased the car throughout and topped up the diff and checked all the suspension bolts, radius arms etc are tight. The wire wheel appears to no...

Rotational squeak!
During the last 100 miles or so of driving my S1 3.8 FHC I have noticed a fairly high pitched squeak emanating I believe from the right rear hub. With the rear of the car in the air and the right rear wheel removed when turning the axle I can hear such a noise occuring once per revolution which I be...

Remove radiator without removing bonnet?
Thank you for all your responses - I hadn't thought of bonnet removal being so relatively straightforward albeit requiring a deal of ingenuity in working it out! In the event I managed to get the rad c/w attached fan out with the bonnet and header tank in situ and after getting the rad recored back ...

Remove radiator without removing bonnet?
The Haynes manual advises that the bonnet should be removed before removing the radiator.
On my early 3.8 S1 it looks as though I could feasibly remove the rad without removing the bonnet.
Am I right or are there some banana skins I haven't foreseen?
Thank you in anticipation
Gareth

Replace or recore S1 raditor?
I have what seems to be a minor leak in my S1 3.8 radiator and certainly the core looks to have had a fairly hard life with some evidence of stone damage etc. It has an aftermarket electric fan (p/no LMEF 16(?)) fitted to it - engine side to draw air through it - that is attached directly to the cor...

Thanks Peter. Novice's question I know but I didn't want to get into removing the scoop without knowing it was going to get me to my suspect multi pin socket! My failed main beam issue looks like it's resolved - no 2 pin had a poor intermittant connection so I re-did it and main beam works. whether ...
