Re: Engine seized after rebuild?

Speak to Rob Beere, he solved this issue for me by changing the pinion on the starter. I also have a 4.2 bellhousing/gearbox on my 3.8.

Re: S1 Not Running / Misfire

Fitted the new plugs this morning, and took the opportunity to check/tighten up all the connections on the ignition system. Car is now running fine - may have been the plugs but more likely a loose connection in the ignition I expect. Thanks for your help and suggestions on this.

Re: S1 Not Running / Misfire

Thanks Richard. Plugs are wet with fuel. Fuel pump is a few years old and I converted to a pump which isn't in the tank but the R/H wheel arch like a 4.2. I do have a brand new SU pump so could replace that if necessary. Looking back at the last compression test back in 2017 pressures were at ~180 p...

S1 Not Running / Misfire

Hello, So I got in my car for a drive last weekend and when the car fired up it was misfiring badly with a lot of shake. I decided not to take it out and have been trouble shooting since. After the first run the car now does not really run anymore, although I do get the occasional short burst. It's ...

Heater Blower

Hello, I recently needed to use the heater blower fan on my 3.8 having not really used it since the car was restored. The blower hardly works on low and on high the blower was very noisy. Given the lack of things to do during lockdown I decided to remove the blower to see if I could improve both the...

Re: Dynator Pulley

Thanks Steve, Indeed I’ve read the posts but none seem to reference where I can get a pulley with the right offset. I’ve tried SNG, Moss, Fosseway etc but no luck so far....

Dynator Pulley

Hello, I have installed a WOSP dynator on my 3.8 but it is not charging well. Today whilst driving the voltmeter was registering 13V but dropped below 12V when the fan came on. I sent it back to WOSP but they returned it saying it was working perfectly. So now I am thinking I need a smaller pulley a...

Re: Starter Motor

Steve, thanks - I didn’t have the spigot plate before. Maybe I was lucky... Do you know the part number of the spigot plate?

Thanks

Starter Motor

Hi, I recently pulled the engine on my 3.8 to rebuild the gearbox and am in the process of putting it all back together. The car has a 3.8 flywheel with a 4.2 bellhousing and a modern starter that’s been modified to work with this set up. Before pulling the engine all was working well however after ...

Gearbox Breather

Hello, My 3.8 has a 4.2 all synchro box fitted, and when the box was recently overhauled it was noticed that the box is missing a breather. Having not noticed any issues prior, i am wondering whether I need to install a breather or not, and also whether I need to install a breather pipe, or just a b...

Re: Engine Rebuild or not?

I'm struggling to find Devcon Gel in the UK (I'm thinking the Gel is the one to use due to its filling properties and ability to adhere to vertical surfaces). Any other recommendation on what to use to seal the 3.8 dome shaped core plugs?

Thanks

Engine Removal Question

Hi, Engine and gearbox almost out of the car (going out the bottom) but a few questions on the last pieces - do I need to drain the oil from the engine before I remove the oil filter housing...? I'm under the impression that the oil level will be above the filter and pour out the block? And then on ...

Re: Engine Rebuild or not?

Thanks for all your advice. You may have a point with the rad cap for the first core plug blow out and the weeping from the head gasket. The car has a Ron Davis radiator and header tank (came with the car) and I was using the cap that I also inherited. I now have a new 7 psi cap but comparing the sp...

Engine Rebuild or not?

Hi, When I restored my e-type a few years ago I didn’t touch the engine (other than carbs etc) as the car had been an abandoned project and I was under the impression the engine had already been done (it has these ‘warranty void if removed’ tags in several places). Anyway it turns out that the gearb...

Re: 1961 3.8 OTS hot start woes on newly restored car.

I second that this is electrical. I had a similar issue on my TR4 and turned out to be the rotor arm. As suggested get a new one from the Distributor Doctor and whilst you're at it get a condensor also. If it turns out not to be these then you'll always have a spare. Only takes 2 mins to change the ...

Windscreen Wipers

Hello The offside wiper on my RHD 3.8 FHC does not bend to match the contour of the windscreen and I suspect that the spring in the wiper arm needs to be stronger. Does anyone know of a supplier who carries wiper arms with decent springs that will give my wipers a better contact with the windscreen?...

Re: Security Tracker

What is the general view on wheel clamps? What is the best brand/style for an e-type? I have a removeable steering wheel on my car but am thinking about a wheel clamp for extra security. Sure it won't stop someone with time and an angle grinder but hopefully using one of those in a public space will...

Hello

I am looking for someone to transport my e-type from the Bristol area to a friend's house in Inverness. Does anyone know of a reliable company that can do this for a reasonable cost?

Thanks

Re: Early 4.2 trim in a 3.8

Thanks for your advice. I'm not sure what early 4.2 trim means either. I think my trimmer might be confusing the post-63 3.8's with the early 4.2s. I had a look at the 'barn find' which has a chassis number very close to mine and also at similar chassis numbers on xkedata. So I can see the centre co...

Early 4.2 trim in a 3.8

Hello I am told that my RHD 3.8 FHC built in March 1964 has early 4.2 trim in it. It's been mooted that this could be original as the car is a late 3.8. Of course the car is 50+ years old so it may well just be that the trim was changed out at some point in the past. Is there any evidence that Jagua...
