Re: Need a body sealing plug

Yes they are only fitted to LHD cars with aircon, mine was pop riveted in place (original) and had never seen a spot weld. It took maybe 1-2 hours to remove the housing and make up a plate to cover the hole, not difficult by any means and most likely much quicker than trying to make some sort of bla...

Re: Need a body sealing plug

With the original pipe housing removed from the bulkhead (pop rivets) simply make a plate to cover the hole and transfer the pop rivet holes to it so it can be riveted in place along with seam sealer to prevent any fumes from the engine bay. It cannot be seen from either side after everything is in ...

Re: Starter problem

Replacement starter (Powerlite RC303) now fitted and working. The pinion engagement worked out at 8mm, without the spacer, not great but hopefully will be okay. As for a sloppy fit, it isn't, the starter locates in the bellhousing without much if any play and with the bolts in place there is hardly ...

Re: Door to sill gap

Hi Alun, For me it would be more important to align the top section of the door in the area where it changes from a curve to the vertical 2 or 3 inches inches as that has to align with the rear wing and the curve needs to align as well. The bottom edge is then what it is. The forward edge of the doo...

Re: Starter problem

Well after spending far too much time on this I decided to throw the towel in, I don't like being beaten but in this case I have to admit defeat. I am convinced its the return spring on the solenoid plunger thats too weak but as you cannot get solenoids anymore there is no way I can prove it. Anyway...

Re: Starter problem

The quote was for an original type.
My question is, is there a difference between a Xj6 starter and an E type, perhaps torque but don't see why it would be different.
Thanks

Re: Starter problem

Yes it works fine out of the car and the relay and ignition switch have been dismantled and checked, both working correctly. I called at a friends garage yesterday and he insisted he checked it out, his comment was, nowt wrong with that. The price I was quoted for a new starter seemed very reasonabl...

Re: Starter problem

Yes Steve, I have the wiring diag. (coloured version) and the workshop manual. I did as you suggest and the 12v appears on the wire at the start position and disappears when the key is released. Yesterday I took the starter out again and went to an auto electrician, he just wanted to sell me a new s...

Re: Starter problem

I disconnected the W/R wire whilst it was cranking and it didn't do anything except give enough time for a cup full of oil to pour out of the pressure switch hole before I could disconnect the battery. My only guess now is, could it be the spring on the solenoid that does not have enough force...

Re: Starter problem

Thanks Colin and Andrew, I thought I had connected the solenoid relay as it was originally but could be wrong, see attached photos. https://i.postimg.cc/HLDDXXfB/IMG-5429.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/XvfM8XW3/IMG-5431.jpg According to the wiring diagram its connected correctly, W/Y on W1 N on C2 R/W on ...

Starter problem

I'm almost at the stage of starting my engine for the first time. The engine was apart when I bought the car 11 years ago ( S2 2+2 4.2 auto) and I have rebuilt it along with everything else on the car. Last week I put a battery in place and connected the cables, when I turned the key the engine turn...

Re: Heated rear window fitting- HELP!!!

After many attempts at fitting the glass, in the end I threw the towel in. Not like me at all as I try to do everything I can by myself. I had a cut thumb and sore hands due to the glass fighting me at every attempt. I used the vacuum clamps, soapy water, rubber mallet and just could not get the gla...

Re: Sill to top of door frame height

Hi Alun,

I just measured my S2 2+2 and sill to top of door opening is 31.5 inches, no reason for it to be different for an S1.
Let me know if you need anything else.

Re: Heated rear window fitting- HELP!!!

Thanks Steve, I had found that on Jag Lovers but had forgotten about the suction clamps. I bought a set a long while ago for fitting the chrome strips when I get to that.
Will dig out the clamps and try again.

Heated rear window fitting- HELP!!!

Please note that fitting a heated window is not the same as an non heated one. The heated version has 2 wires attaching to the internal elements at the bottom edge, these wires pass through the rubber and then through the door frame. I cannot find anything in the forum, manuals or books I have other...

Re: Most Boring Door Hanging/Hinge pin Adventure in the World

Hi Rory, I don't want to put a dampener on your efforts but how do you intend retaining the silver steel pin? It will harden if you try to weld it, though I doubt it would weld.
Good luck.

Re: How to remove rear badges?

Yes its simply friction and yes just slide them off from the back and yes they can be reused if you don't break them or lose them.
Can you add your name to your profile please.
Thanks

Re: How to remove rear badges?

Take/lift the door card off the inside of the door to expose the pins and the ferrules that slide over the pins, then lightly grip the ferrules with pliers and slide them off the pins. I don't mean to be picky but calling the pins or ferrules tangs can be misleading and unless you understand what yo...

Re: Adaptive cruise control

I think you would be better getting a car that already had it. Its a complex system using Lidar and works with the ABS system which the E type does not have. Personally from using it in my Range Rover I think its a pain in the backside. If you are on a slight curve on a motorway it picks up vehicles...
