Re: Bodyshop recommendations Devon/Cornwall
Hi Josh, sorry about your accident, you must be fuming. Checkout Blackline Classic Cars in Cullompton, they have worked miracles on my FHC body and they have huge experience with E-Types. These days they also do a lot of repair work. I can thoroughly recommend them. Mark

Re: SU HD8 bush removal
A bit of feedback: I spoke to Chris at Burlen and he didn’t think early bushes were brass so my concern re brass spindles running in original bushes was allayed. Burlen did offer to re-bush but Chris suggested a trial fitting of both the new spindles and butterflies from the rebuild kit before decid...

Re: SU HD8 bush removal
Thanks Steve, looks like it’s far too risky for DIY. My new brass shafts are not a bad fit in the existing bushes with just a tiny amount of slop. I am tempted to use them as is but that would mean brass shafts running in brass bushes which does not sound right. I’ll call Burlen next week to discuss...

SU HD8 bush removal
The triple SU carbs for my 1962 3.8 are fully stripped and have been vapour blasted ready for my Burlen rebuild kit. I need to source (buy/hire/borrow) a 9.5mm pilot reamer to remove the butterfly shaft bushes. My original bushes look like brass, used with steel butterfly shafts, whereas the kit inc...

Re: Rear Suspension IRS Alignment and Sensitivity of Shimming
I guess the leading question has to be how sure are you that the rear chassis rails are 100% in the correct place?
Probably a session with a modern laser rig is the only way to get the alignment spot-on.

Re: Short skirts!
Thanks for an excellent run-down Paul. Rob's uprated oil pump, Sportsman rods, 9kg flywheel and the larger valves etc. are definitely now on the shopping list! There have been many comments about a torque dip at around 2200-2300 RPM even with a mild cam, I would guess you have been able to offset th...

Paul, out of interest was yours a 3:8 and did you stick with standard cam profile? Keen to gather as much first hand info as possible…

Re: Short skirts!
Totally agree about Classic and Modern, they have done other work for me and I was very impressed when they took me on a tour of their workshop. Deffo they are in the loop for acid dip and honing of the block if keeping existing pistons/liners but they could only offer SNG Hepolite old- school pisto...

Short skirts!
I’m about to embark on the rebuild of a badly restored 3.8 engine that was performed when Noah was still in short trousers. The engine did less than 20 miles after and has stood untouched since. Big questions: 1/ The accepted wisdom is to renew 4.2 liners are a matter of course - does the same apply...

Re: New rear splined hub problems
OK moment of madness has passed, I’ll attempt to get the flingers off! There is a cross- hatch machine peening all around the join so I will probably have to grind this away somehow. Pity I fitted the taper rollers before I realised the new splined hubs with flingers wouldn’t be compatible…. Thanks ...

Re: New rear splined hub problems
Hi Chris,
I was initially a bit spooked by this idea but looking online I can see that later hubs have a chamfer on the outer rim and a definite notch in the webs to match. Tonight I’ll get the grinder out!
Thanks for your help,
Mark

New rear splined hub problems
I’m trying to install new splined hubs + bearings etc to my early rear hub carriers (C19063 LM 10). The ‘flingers’ (which seem to be integral with all the hubs currently on the market ) are preventing the splined hub fully engaging with the carrier. These were not part of my old splined hubs. Has an...

Re: Curly hub wheels on S2 front uprights
Andrew I seem to recall reading in a magazine an ‘authority’ informing that 420G uprights were a good upgrade and had stronger stub axles (actually I now believe the stub axles same as S1). Also another source (forgotten now) said curly hubs would snag these. Thanks for confirming the wheels are int...

Re: Curly hub wheels on S2 front uprights
Steve, the 420G uprights were fitted years go as they came complete with 3 pot callipers (v heavy) and vented discs. These will be replaced with modern lightweight versions.

Curly hub wheels on S2 front uprights
The long and winding road of my S1 restoration (July 62) has brought me to a key decision point on front brakes/hubs/wheels. Although in bits for years, restoration has been progressing now at a pace. Car has S2 uprights (actually 420G I believe) and S3 flat hub wires. Would curly hub wheels fit OK ...

Re: Cylinder block acid dip
Thanks everybody for the feedback, very reassuring to know it doesn't cause a problem. I guess modern anti-freeze and/ or the factory standard 2 jars of Barrs Leaks also helps keep rusting at bay.
Any recommendations for companies that can do an acid dip in the South?

Cylinder block acid dip
Does anyone have experience of having this done? Surely the internal surfaces (those that cannot be painted with Glyptal) will rust away like crazy?

Many thanks for the recommendations - the JLN outfit looks ideal. I'm going to give Steve's DIY suggestion a quick try but if not 100% I'll be off to these guys ASAP.
