I'm just down the road near Southend if I can ever be of assistance . . .

Re: Series 2 aesthetics
Bob, Geoff, that measurement on my car is only 6.75" . I guess there will inevitably be slight variations depending on the system and fittings used. No doubt a bit of extra clearance could be obtained by adjusting the rear exhaust mounting if necessary. There should in any case be adequate clearance...

Re: Bonnet lock handles orientation
It must be possible to fit them either way because mine used to face in opposite directions. However since Angus retrimmed the car they now both face to the right. So that must be correct !

Re: Boot board dimensions
Just measured mine, Andy. Pretty much the same length, 740mm but a tad wider, 305 and 660.
No reason to believe they're not original. They are quite a tight fit.

Re: Exhaust Fitting
Hi Ian, I also fitted a Bell system from SNGB and did it with just the back end on axle stands and working in a space of about 18 inches between the car and the garage wall so you should be ok ! I found it fitted very well although I needed to cut a couple of inches off the back of the pipes that go...

Re: Securon automatic belts.
Yes I found my original static belts very awkward and replaced them with Securon automatic ones. The fitting of the stalk on the transmission tunnel and the end of the belt on the floor on the opposite side are both straightforward. The problematic part is fitting the reel to the fitting under the s...

Re: MOT status
This is not true. The only thing that is automatic is that the car will require an MOT every year. The exemption is optional, not automatic. The owner / keeper must apply for it. No, this is not true. I was confused by this issue at first but when you get your head around it, it's actually quite si...

Hi Geoff and welcome. Nice to hear of another member in Essex.
I'm sure you'll find the forum invaluable. I've accumulated much of my modest knowledge from here.

Re: Bonnet catch
Hi Bernie, you might find the problem is with the catch part on the bonnet. Have you recently bought a new one ? When I bought my car that part was missing so I bought a new one. I couldn't make it work anyhow. I tried bending the bracket on the bulkhead like you but couldn't get close. Then I reali...

Re: Merry Christmas
I rarely contribute on here because there are always plenty of people who know more than I do but I do read regularly and sit here quietly absorbing knowledge. When I bought my car six years ago I knew virtually nothing about E types. Now I know quite a lot and I have learnt nearly all of it from An...

Re: Show everyone your garage!
Hi Jonny...you do realise that we have a complete section...my dream garage......Steve For some of us "my actual garage " is a very different thing  If I don't get the car within a couple of inches of the wall, I can't get out. Even so, I have managed to change the whole exhaust system on the ...

Re: Repetitive application of my head to brickwork.
Not wishing to insult you by stating the obvious, Richard, but don't forget to move that brake pipe well clear of the air filter before you start using the car. At best it will create noise as it is. At worst the vibration could wear through the brake pipe in time.

Re: Repetitive application of my head to brickwork.
Seems to me you might be looking for faults that aren't there. I have no idea what goes on inside a 123 distributor but with a standard system, if the points are closed, as soon as you turn on the ignition you will get a current flowing from the battery through the coil and back to earth via the eng...

Re: MOT experiment
Hi Julian, Since my post on this subject a few weeks back I have come to the conclusion that it is all actually very simple. If your car is over 40 years old it IS exempt from the MoT. Full stop. It is not a decision for the owner. If you decide to have a voluntary test it is if no interest to the p...

Re: Engine rebuild advice
Hi Julian, Angus had my engine rebuilt at CMES in Bracknell and I've been very happy with it, but if you're looking for somewhere closer to home there is a firm not far from you called Scholar Engines, just off the A140 at Mendlesham. They have been going a long time and specialise in various racing...
