Ah Ha!

Now I know why the new rubber seals (purchased from one of the usual suspects) had the holes in the wrong place.

Never throw anything out.

Replacement chrome is of a thinner gauge and for the most part doesn't fit. Re-chrome the originals.

Here are a few tips you may find useful: - buy your new thermostat from one of the "usual suspects". -install thermostat with piddler valve up. - when installing the fan belt pulley tighten the bolts sequentially. All inexpensive answers to your problem.

I can only suggest that you replace the idler pulley.

If you adjust the belt tension only by the alternator bracket without the idler pulley it you could put too much strain on the water pump bearing thus shortening its life.

It also makes belt replacement easier with the idler in place.

Another item on the "to do" list.

When the engine is running, I can turn all loads and the ammeter shows nothing. Have I got an open circuit somewhere? Yes, it could be a faulty ammeter. How does one test this without buying another one? Thanks for your input.

I have a 1967 Series 1.

The ammeter does not defect under running conditions but the car runs fine.

If I charge the battery with a charger and switch on the ignition, it shows a charge.
