On my new belts (supplied by Quickfit), the lower rectangular loops that the belt are stitched around is plastic dipped (presumably to protect the nylon), but not the eyebolts.

Thanks for that - good idea. TBH I assumed they were the same things. I ordered some fabric self-amalgamating tape from Amazon just now.

I guess in the context of normal operation, it isolates the leaking circuit from line pressure. It's not immediate or permanent, but I suppose it gets the idea across?

Thanks Chris. It's a 4.2.The carbs were professionally refurbished by Tony Hebden in Sheffield in about 2015. The car hasn't been run since. The throttle spindle bearings were reamed, and all the float valves replaced and re-set to the correct heights (apparently one of them was from a Morris Minor)...
